Chapter Seventeen

Freedom, Kansas

Three nights later, Cenobia was humming along to the music playing on the kitchen sound system and handing the rinsed-off dishes to Adán who was stacking them in the dishwasher when she realized she hadn’t thought of her car or her company once since she’d woken up.

Pleasantly stuffed on steaks and elote that Bartolo had prepared, and waiting for the men to return with firewood before beginning a comedy movie marathon—Nosotros Los Nobles then No Se Aceptan Devoluciones—she also realized that she didn’t care that she hadn’t thought about car or company.

Her father was out of the hospital and recovering with full-time care at home, his already beefed-up security augmented by Sheppard Security and a ring of Guardia Nacional surrounding the compound. With eleven days until the launch of La Primera at the Frankfurt Auto Show, her staff was seeing to the last details, all of the cobots were repaired and being installed on the line, and five perfect examples of La Primera were approaching the port at Duisburg-Ruhrort.

Sheppard Security had traced the cobot sabotage to a small cell of eco-tech terrorists out of Jalisco, but the five teens and twentysomethings had already fled the country by the time the team arrived. They were now hunting them internationally, anticipating proof that Las Luces Oscuras had paid their bill.

The one cloud in Glori’s latest report: she still hadn’t uncovered the leak. In fact, all of her efforts to uncover the leak—planting bugs, whispering false rumors, even hiring a subcontractor to offer bribes and favors to members of both teams—had been so fruitless, Glori wrote, that she would have declared there was no leak. Except for the obvious evidence to the contrary.

But Cenobia’s loved ones were safe, Trujillo Industries was churning along, and she was staying as engaged as circumstances would allow. She’d given the full decade of her twenties to the company. Now, in this strange forced vacation, it was difficult for her to care what was going on beyond the grey lake and tall trees.

She let her eyes linger on Adán as he figured out how to get a baking sheet in the dishwasher. She’d hated the sense that her father wanted her to be nothing but pretty and useless. While she’d never prioritized learning to cook, she now knew how to properly chop vegetables and get a good sear on a steak. Here Adán, too, had learned things that would see him through whatever life threw his way: how to fill a dishwasher, how to make an apple pie, how to fold laundry. How to drive.

She’d continued Adán’s driving lessons, despite Bartolo’s grumbles. She was glad for this time with the bodyguard who’d always stood by her side like it was a choice he’d made, instead of a job. He’d entirely abandoned his own personal life to protect her, then essentially raised Adán. She hoped, in time, that he could forgive himself for what happened to her. The fault was all hers, none of his.

There was so much she was learning about Adán in the cab of a royal billionaire’s truck.
