Joseph found Theodotosâ villa more than spacious and his servants more than gracious towards the growing number of people now residing under its roof.
As he unpacked his few meager belongings and set his sleeping mat against the wall, a servant woman brought in trays of fruit and washed their feet.
Joseph relaxed under the process. Heâd not experienced the hands of servants before. Living in the small village of Nazareth under the roof of a stonemason didnât afford such luxury. Empty stomachs and dirty feet were attended to by oneâs own hands.
Looking at his siblings, he could see they enjoyed the indulgence as well.
When they were settled and clean, the siblings filtered through the house.
James and Jude joined some of the other men in discussions. Assia and Salome spoke with some of the women who kept company with their mother. Lydia followed behind but kept to the rim of the collection of women.
Joseph shadowed his brothers as they met the different men who followed their brother.
Peter had already introduced them to the two sons of Zebedee, James and John.
âThis is my brother, Andrew,â Peter said, putting a firm grip on the manâs shoulder who stood before them. âHeâs the reason Iâm here.â
âJesus is the reason we are all here,â Andrew corrected his brother.
Peter patted his shoulder. âBut it was you who told me of him and convinced me to meet him. Without you, I would still be fishing.â He chuckled.
âWe are still fishing,â Andrew teased. âJust seeking a different kind of fish.â
Peter let out a howl of laughter.
Joseph was lost to the joke they seemed to share among themselves.
Peter wiped away a tear. âSo true, so true.â
A group of three men came toward them from another room.
âAh, brothers.â Peter waved them over. âJoin us.â
Joseph leaned over to Jamesâ ear. âAre they all related?â
âNot exactly.â James spread out his hands.
âThis is Philip, Bartholomew, and James.â Peter pointed to each man as he introduced them.
âAnother James?â Joseph asked before he thought better of the question.
Peter looked to the man and then to Josephâs brother. âJames ben Zebedee, James ben Alpheus, and James benâ¦â he waved to James.
âBen Joseph,â James finished.
âJoseph?â Peter scratched his head. âI thought your brotherâs name was Joseph.â
âI am,â Joseph answered for himself. âIt was also our fatherâs name.â
âJoseph ben Joseph?â Peter howled again as he slapped his thigh. âWe Hebrews are not a very creative lot when it comes to names, are we?â
âRemember how many Marys we have staying here?â Philip interjected.
âDonât remind me.â Peter rubbed his palm to his forehead. âI still canât keep all of them separated.â
âIt doesnât help that they travel in a herd,â another added as he approached the group.
Peter snorted. âYou speak truth, my friend.â He shook his head. âThis is Matthew; former tax collector.â
Matthew turned to Peter. âYou donât have to share that with everyone.â
âWe all have a past, but Messiah is our future.â Peter smacked Matthewâs back. âBut you are right about those women. They are like a pride of lionesses following their queen.
