Chapter Twenty-Two

Zane insisted on stopping by the North Hollywood police station to report Lettie missing. Angel thought it felt like a waste of time. Zane didn't want to tell him the real reason: that he was fearful if something terrible happened to Lettie that he'd never know.

The officer had a lot of questions, asked with a brisk kindness that suggested she had filled out many of these forms before and not had a lot of success seeing any good come from them. Besides the height, weight, hair color questions Zane had expected, she also asked about tattoos, whether Lettie smoked or drank, what kind of places she liked to go to, what she was wearing, psychological problems, whether or not she knew how to drive.

The officer, whose nametag read R. Lopez, had brought them to a small interrogation room. Her questions felt like an interrogation of Zane’s guardian skills. How well did he know Lettie? How well was he really looking after her? He tried to silence the critical voices in his head and reminded himself the officer was just going through a questionnaire.

“What was going on in her life the day she left? Any fights or conflicts?” Officer Lopez had long eyelashes framing slightly protruding eyes.

Angel leaned back in the plastic chair as though to distance himself from the question. Zane wondered, and not for the first time, who had gotten who mixed up in this ring.

"She got involved with some bad people," Zane said. "Back in Tulsa." He walked her through Wally Zittman's death, Perrine's visit to the apartment, the trip to their grandmother's house and Lettie's departure. He held back the information that she'd taken some property from the men who sought her. He understood the importance but didn't want to implicate Lettie in the crimes any more than he had to.

“Do the Tulsa Police know she’s missing?”

Zane's mind flashed with images of the night at Bamboozles, the smell of tires burning as Perrine made his getaway. He'd held back from Old Spice, too, telling him Lettie was missing but leaving out his sister's poorly thought-out blackmail plan or whatever it was from the detective for the same reasons he did so with Officer Lopez. He wanted the police's help in finding Lettie, but he didn't want to make things worse than they had to be. That's why he wanted to be the one to find her. He would set things right. That was his job as her big brother and her guardian.

Zane nodded and pulled out his phone, so he could give the officer Old Spice's phone number, impatient to get this over with and drive over to the shelter in Hollywood.

“Is there anything else we should know? About her health? Does she take any medications like insulin or anything else?”

Angel leaned forward in the chair. It was obvious to Zane that he wanted to say something, and Zane was afraid he would blurt out Lettie's blackmail plan. He shot the teen a look that said keep it quiet.
