Richards and the Wolverine set out at first light. They were armed to the teeth, and Richards seethed with anger. They had followed Arish into the woods but had lost the fleeing man as the shadows had lengthened and the sun dropped below the horizon. Arish had at last realized how easy it was to follow the noise he was making and had quieted his movements. From that moment on, neither Richards nor the Wolverine had seen or heard anything further from their prey.
Now, with the new day upon them, it was once again light enough to begin tracking in earnest. They started out from the cabin, with Richards stepping around the areas of the ground still colored with the blood from the murdered migrants. The Wolverine had pressed some of his men into service to move the bodies to a dump heap about a mile into the woods, where they now lay in an impromptu and uncovered mass grave.
Along with Richards and the Wolverine walked a third man, this one thin and wiry, and looking more like an old-time trapper than anyone living in the modern era. He wore a buckskin coat, along with corduroy pants worn almost smooth, and a pair of dirty moccasins. His grizzled face was twisted in a permanent scowl, and he chewed furiously on a wad of tobacco as he surveyed the treeline.
âYouâre up, Forrest,â the Wolverine said.
âDonât see why I have to be the one,â the little man said.
The Wolverine gave him a push, taking care not to shove too hard. The man was so diminutive that anything with too much force might just knock him over entirely.
âBecause youâre the best tracker I know,â the Wolverine said. âNow get moving; weâre burning daylight here. The last thing we need is the prisoner making it to a state highway or something.â
Forrest seemed to take this directive to heart and took off at a lope into the woods. Richards and the Wolverine followed a few paces behind, although Richards was soon breathing heavily.
âHow the hell is he moving like that?â he panted. âHeâs got to be almost twice my age.â
âForrest isnât human,â the Wolverine said. âHeâs a machine.â
âDoes he even know where heâs going?â
âHe always knows where heâs going.â
