Chapter Eight
Gigi paced the living room, angry that Harrison hadnât called her. Not that he owed her anything. But sheâd been out of sorts ever since theyâd played golf on Sunday.
She stopped in the center of the room, then shook it off. She strode to the garage, then took an empty acrylic drinking glass from the kitchen and returned to the living room. She laid the glass on its side and practiced puttingâjust in case Harrison did call and suggest they play another round at Hillside.
The first two shots breezed past the glass, one of which rolled under the sofa. She blew out a sigh and slapped one hand on her hip as the other gripped the putter.
Okay. She could certainly use the practice, but there was no way sheâd take a freakinâ lesson. Not from Ken.
The last time sheâd run into him at the pro shop, heâd asked why he hadnât seen her lately, and sheâd made a stupid and embarrassing Freudian slip. My scheduleâs been very erotic lately.
Heâd lifted his brow, and his lips quirked into an assumptive grin.
Erratic! Sheâd blurted out the word to correct the mistake. But heâd laughed, and then later that same day, when sheâd seen him in the club dining room, he seemed to think they had a private joke, which they most certainly did not.
Ken actually thought that sheâd go out with himâat least, heâd been about to broach the subject when she steered the conversation in another direction. He was so not her type. And too cocky for his own good.
Funny how sheâd once thought the same thing about Harrison. But she now realized sheâd been wrong, especially considering the kindness heâd shown her after the game, the way heâd listenedâtruly listened to her. He seemed to get her like no one else ever had.
Other than Grampy, of course. Her great-grandfather had known she could have taken over the CEO position at Fortune Metals. He would have encouraged her to go to college right after high school. And he would have insisted that her father give her and Reeve equal respect and responsibilities.
But Grampy was gone. And sheâd yet to find anyone else whoâd loved her the way he had, or whoâd wholeheartedly listened to her as if her thoughts and feelings had great value.
Except for Harrison. Was he someone she could trust? She wanted to believe that he was.
Sheâd expected him to call after theyâd left Hillside Country Club, but he hadnât, which was disappointing, but at least heâd sent a text, thanking her for the game. But sheâd hoped for...
No, she hadnât expected anything else and wouldnât let silly what-ifs weigh her down. So she kept herself busy on Monday, calling clients, scheduling meetings and responding to never-ending emails.
On Wednesday morning, she drove to Chatelaine to tape another podcast and to meet with Sylvia Vasquez at her home. Sheâd no more than passed the Harvâs New BBQ sign when Diana Dawson, who was producing todayâs podcast, called.
Gigi answered. âDiana, Iâm almost at the station.
