The hole was almost two hundred feet wide and seemed to go another few hundred into the ground. Maisy sat on the edge, peering into it. She leaned forward a little more. Arthurâs hand immediately gripped her shoulder. âNot too far.â
âI wonât.â But she didnât lean back. She leaned a little more forward, staring into the dark depths, knowing Arthur wouldnât let her fall. âIâve never seen a hole so deep.â
âItâs called a sinkhole. The ground underneath slowly empties out until the ground along the surface collapses in on itself.â
Maisy shivered at the idea. The one thing you should be able to count on was the ground under your feet remaining solid. She imagined walking along and the ground suddenly opening up underneath her. And then she would be falling and falling, maybe forever. âNo one would be safe.â
Arthur pulled her onto his lap. âI will never let anything happen to you.â
She shook her head. âYou wouldnât be able to protect me.â
âThen I would fall with you.â
She hugged his arm closer to her, knowing he was telling her the truth. If a sinkhole opened underneath her, Arthur would dive in after her. He would not leave her alone. She leaned her arm against him with a sigh.
The two of them sat there just listening to the quiet. The camp was a few hundred yards back. The Cursed were training under Lewisâs instruction. He was as tough as Lyla when it came to training. Maisy and Arthur had gone for a walk. Maisy had secretly hoped they might find her mom and the boys. They hadnât come back to the camp last night, although her mom had said they probably wouldnât if they found something. She didnât like being separated from them. She was always worried something would happen to them. Not that she could do much to help them, but like Arthur said, sheâd rather fall with them than stay safe up on the surface.
Arthur rubbed her arm. âWe should get back.â
Maisy climbed from his lap. âOkay.â
She took Arthurâs hand, and they headed back to the camp. She sighed, peeking up at Arthur, who was scanning the area for any threats. She didnât want to go back to the camp. She was the youngest person there, and everyone except Petra and Arthur treated her like she was. She could do stuff. No, she wasnât a Cursed with special abilities, but she wasnât completely helpless. She grabbed her water skin and took a drink, then shook it. âHey, Arthur?â
âHmm?â
âMaybe we should fill up the water skins. Mineâs pretty low.â
He smiled down at her. âGood idea. I think I heard water this way.â
Maisy smiled, skipping next to him. A little more time away from the camp. Good.
