The hole was almost two hundred feet wide and seemed to go another few hundred into the ground. Maisy sat on the edge, peering into it. She leaned forward a little more. Arthur’s hand immediately gripped her shoulder. “Not too far.”

“I won’t.” But she didn’t lean back. She leaned a little more forward, staring into the dark depths, knowing Arthur wouldn’t let her fall. “I’ve never seen a hole so deep.”

“It’s called a sinkhole. The ground underneath slowly empties out until the ground along the surface collapses in on itself.”

Maisy shivered at the idea. The one thing you should be able to count on was the ground under your feet remaining solid. She imagined walking along and the ground suddenly opening up underneath her. And then she would be falling and falling, maybe forever. “No one would be safe.”

Arthur pulled her onto his lap. “I will never let anything happen to you.”

She shook her head. “You wouldn’t be able to protect me.”

“Then I would fall with you.”

She hugged his arm closer to her, knowing he was telling her the truth. If a sinkhole opened underneath her, Arthur would dive in after her. He would not leave her alone. She leaned her arm against him with a sigh.

The two of them sat there just listening to the quiet. The camp was a few hundred yards back. The Cursed were training under Lewis’s instruction. He was as tough as Lyla when it came to training. Maisy and Arthur had gone for a walk. Maisy had secretly hoped they might find her mom and the boys. They hadn’t come back to the camp last night, although her mom had said they probably wouldn’t if they found something. She didn’t like being separated from them. She was always worried something would happen to them. Not that she could do much to help them, but like Arthur said, she’d rather fall with them than stay safe up on the surface.

Arthur rubbed her arm. “We should get back.”

Maisy climbed from his lap. “Okay.”

She took Arthur’s hand, and they headed back to the camp. She sighed, peeking up at Arthur, who was scanning the area for any threats. She didn’t want to go back to the camp. She was the youngest person there, and everyone except Petra and Arthur treated her like she was. She could do stuff. No, she wasn’t a Cursed with special abilities, but she wasn’t completely helpless. She grabbed her water skin and took a drink, then shook it. “Hey, Arthur?”

“Hmm?”

“Maybe we should fill up the water skins. Mine’s pretty low.”

He smiled down at her. “Good idea. I think I heard water this way.”

Maisy smiled, skipping next to him. A little more time away from the camp. Good.
