Chapter 20

Chase found herself in darkness again. This time the throbbing through her body wasn't the sound anymore, just her heartbeat. She wriggled but the rope didn't budge. Down here in the darkness, any hope she had of holding herself together quickly dissolved.

She hadn't even gotten a good look at the suspect.

The fear crawled up out of the corners of the room and swelled until it had become a heavy weight pressing on her from all sides. She flashed back to That Time again, a time she hadn't thought about in a while. A time she even had deluded herself into thinking she had gotten over ever since the Deborah Doyle case when she'd been forced to surmount the fear in order to make it out alive.

But deep wounds like that don't just go away. They just lurk under the skin, waiting, always waiting for a chance to come out.

Her breath caught in her lungs and her whole body ached. Panic raced through her veins like acid. She struggled and tried to loosen the grip of the rope around her hands—but it wouldn't budge. She heard herself whimper. Then she heard something shuffle from over the other side of the room and her heart went into overdrive.

"Get the hell away from me!" She yelled.

"What the—Chase? I assumed I'd run into you again, but never thought it would be like this."

Chase frantically tried to look around the dark room, her heart rocketing out of her chest. She couldn't see a thing. It took her a while to break out of the panic and even realize she wasn't in immediate danger. But after taking a few breaths she finally found a brief moment of sanity and it clicked.

"Who's there?" She called out.

"It's me, Hank Acre."

Chase saw the small light from his phone lighting up a familiar face. "Lieutenant Acre? Is that really you?"

"It's me. But I haven't been a lieutenant for a while."

"Thank god. Hurry up and untie me before Sparks gets back. He has a shotgun."

The figure moved closer and then she smelled Camels and knew it really was Acre—that this wasn't just delusion in the midst of her panic. It felt embarrassing that he'd seen her in that state but they had more things to worry about now. After a few fumbled attempts, Acre cursed and just got out his knife, then cut through the rope binding Chase's arms behind her. She threw off the rest of the rope herself and scrambled up off the floor.

"Let's get out of here," Chase said.

"You can relax, Sparks is long gone."

"What?"

"I saw him hot tail it out of here on my way in. Escaped out the back and vamoosed into the next yard."

"But what are you even doing here, Acre? And—shit, McEnry!"

They rushed out of the dark room into the kitchen—and Chase realized they'd been inside the larder. She stormed to the stairs and went up them, coming into the office to find McEnry sitting by the wall grabbing his side and breathing heavily.
