Work had shown me one thing if nothing else. I could understand better than ever why people looked forward to Friday. I had never looked forward to the weekend this much when I was in school, but then, I’d never worked very hard in school.

I worked my ass off this week, for sure, and not only filling in for a missing crew member or placing phone calls to suppliers dragging their asses instead of delivering what they’d promised. It probably helped that my last name happened to be Black, the same as the company’s owner. Regardless of the reason, I got shit done.

That wasn’t all I’d spent energy on. Ever since the fundraiser, I’d been ducking Rose like my life depended on it. She was a relationship kind of girl.

It was a real change of pace, in other words. Rose was the one trying to corner me, trying to get a word in, while I kept myself busy to avoid being alone with her. It was easier that way. She would get the hint. Besides, she had Landon on her plate, and there was way too much fresh pussy in Manhattan for me to get tied down to one in East Hampton.

“What the hell, man?” My cousin, Lucian, checked his phone, laughing as he held it up to display the time. He had the same laugh as his old man, Uncle Connor—throaty and loud. “That’s the third time you’ve yawned in five minutes. Are we that fucking boring?”

I had to raise my voice over the dull roar around us. “In a word? Fuck, yeah.” I laughed along with everybody else but was irritated at being so easy to read.

It was a typical Friday night in Midtown, with bodies pressing on all sides and no shortage of eye candy to stir my interest and my dick. If only I weren’t so beat after spending a week waking up earlier than I sometimes went to bed, then working nine or ten hours.

“Remember, everybody…” Noah held up his hands, signaling for quiet even as he smirked like the smug prick he could sometimes be, “… our friend, Colton, is getting used to the working man’s lifestyle. He’s not used to busting his ass all day, then partying all night.”

“I’d tell you you’d get used to it, but you won’t be doing it long enough,” Evan offered with the same easygoing shrug I’d seen a million times since we met on the first day of school.

“Thanks for the encouragement.” I set my glass down on the table before slouching in my chair and blowing out a sigh. “It’s been a long week.”

“I bet my sister didn’t make it any easier on you,” Noah pointed out with a grimace as if he understood.
