Chapter Fourteen
Fenella noticed only slowly that they seemed to be going back into the late-evening chaos of Covent Garden. Praed Street was in the opposite direction. She looked out of the window. “I thought we were going back to your lodging.”
“I wasn’t ready to call it a night alone after you said you wanted to go home,” he responded, leaning back, his arms folded, watching her with an amused glint in his eye. “The fire will be out at home and it’ll be generally unwelcoming, so I had somewhere else in mind.”
“Oh. May I ask where?”
“Wait and see.” He smiled in the shadowy dimness of the carriage.
Despite her mixed feelings, her sense of confusion over her abrupt change of mind and the way it had been changed, Fenella felt a surge of excitement. It had been such a long time since she’d felt this simple excitement, this pleasurable anticipation, and she savored it like the marzipan on a childhood birthday cake . . . How she’d delighted in peeling off the icing to reveal the rich, golden, almond paste. She could almost taste the sweetness now, lingering on her tongue.

The carriage drew up on a quiet street away from the Piazza, although the raucous noise of late-night revelry could be heard on the crisp air. Edward jumped down and held up a hand for Fenella, who took it and stepped to the cobbled street in front of a handsome, double-fronted house, its windows discreetly curtained, a lamp over the front door lit in welcome.
“Who lives here?” she asked as Edward paid the cabbie and turned to the front door.
“Madam Elizabeth runs the establishment,” he said, pulling the bell chain. “And she runs it with the utmost discretion, I can promise you.” The door opened, and a liveried servant stood in the entry, examining the new arrivals before bowing.
“Mr. Tremayne, sir. A pleasure indeed. It’s been a while since you visited us.” His eyes flicked to Fenella, and she had the impression that however quick the glance, she had been assessed, from the pearls in her hair, to the ermine cloak and the bronze slippers on her feet.
“Please, come in. I’ll tell Madam you’re here.” He held the door wide for them to enter the large, square hall, softly lit with gas lamps, the air faintly perfumed, a few brocade armchairs scattered around. Laughter and the sound of a piano came from behind a pair of double doors to the right.
“What is this place?” Fenella demanded in an undertone. “Who is Madam Elizabeth?”
Edward gave her a wicked grin. “Guess.” He set his hat and gloves on a small table, then shrugged out of his evening cloak.
Fenella’s eyes widened as she stared at him, the impossible truth taking shape. He was looking far too pleased with himself. “It’s not . .
