Chapter 25

Saturday, January 13th

All heads in Zach’s living room and dining room swiveled in his direction as he entered. Sunlight shone through his windows. Saoirse had been missing one full day. Wes and Julian made it to him first, and when Zach looked at two of his closest friends, he almost lost his footing. “I need her. Please find her.”

The two men swallowed him in their arms. After years of experiences together, a hug between men was not an issue.

“Mon ami, we will find her.” Julian placed the back of his hand on Zach’s forehead. “Fever is down.”

Zach barked a laugh. “I see fatherhood is good for you.” He managed a smile.

“C’mon, sit at the table. We will set you up with some juice and toast,” Wes said.

“Do we have anything?” Zach focused on the group seated at the table and gasped. Kieran Chase; Mike Johnson, Deputy CEO of CSI; Bruce Steele, Co-Director of Infrastructure Security; as well as Ford, Kyle, and Tighe were present. Around his living room sat Killian; Deb; Brad; Josh Stone, head of the elite Bravo Team; and Tobey O’Mara and Chad Thorn, heads of Zulu Team.

“We went back to the beginning of the case. Ford and Bruce dragged Hewson out of bed, and we met at his office. We conferenced with DeWitt from San Diego. Martin is ready to get down on his knees, beg your forgiveness and resign. I told him the mistake rises to the top: me. DeWitt was sketchy on the info, turns out it was brought to him by…” Kieran paused.

“Saoirse’s San Diego partner, Andre Nolan,” Zach sneered. “We bumped into him at a café in Connecticut. He said he was getting a deposition from, as Saoirse found out, a protected witness. Besides the freighter that dumped their human cargo here, a ship was caught at the Port of San Diego bringing in knock-off designer wares. Saoirse found a second ship in dock at the same time carrying medical supplies with sketchy financials. I’ll bet if we look harder, it will be owned by the same protected witness.”

Kieran frowned. “I spoke to Nolan. He’s slick. He played dumb, not believing humans were coming through San Diego. At the time of the boat with the designer duds, he got a write-up from his boss for attitude. Acted very distraught about Saoirse, but I think it was for show. Either way, DeWitt is sending us the file he should have sent us to begin with. I also traced Nolan’s cell; it pinged at his home. We traced other calls to his home, office, supermarket, pharmacy and a few restaurants in San Diego before and after Saoirse disappeared. The background check we ran on him in December looks like a template. NROTC, law school, JAG attorney, separated to join the US Attorney. Wife and three kids. I ordered another background check, but it’s slow. As a federal agent, he has multiple layers of protection. Even Ian and I are having trouble getting through.”

“I sent an order to have my people put eyes on him and his family.
