Eighteen hours was a long time. They rarely had to jump so far. With how space worked, a lot of charted and claimed sectors intersected one another, overlapping on different axes. The galaxy was not a top-down, two-dimensional plane, so going from one side to the other was a singularly rare occurrence.
Usually, he wouldnât mind the time because he could use it to plan for their missionâhow to handle the different conditions of the planet and how to combat whatever dangers they might faceâbut this planet was unknown. All they knew was that it sat in close proximity to a dying red star. They knew there would be Prime Ones ruins, so at least he could somewhat plan for those dangers. Most ruins had some sorts of traps.
Beyond those two bits of information, they were flying blind. He hated flying blind. It could get someone killed, and he didnât want any of his crew, his family, to die.
In the end though, there was nothing he could do but accept it and prepare as best he could, get himself ready mentally, go down to the hold with Nummer to make sure their gear and weapons were in working order, which it all was. Nummer was a surprising stickler about that, though Melias realized that shouldnât have been a surprise given his upbringing.
When there was about eight hours left, he forced everyone to get some rest. They didnât know what they might face, and it was best that they were all in top shape for it. So, Aaron cooked up a hardy meal and then they all went to bed. At jump, the Goose could be left alone for the most part. They had automated systems in place that could make sure everything ran smoothly. In the event of a malfunction, they would be woken.
With two hours to go, he awoke, as did the rest of the crew, and they prepared.
When he felt the ship lurch out of jump, he made his way to the cockpit, where Niath was already waiting with Vasya. Both stared straight ahead, and with good reason. Before them was the planet, a small ball of ruddy coloring and rock, like Mars but darker and more depressing.
That, however, wasnât what was striking. It was the sun. It took up a third of the cockpit window. It was a deep red, blood red, and he knew it didnât give off very much heat. The world down there couldnât be one with any life left. That at least meant they wouldnât have to worry about any living thing attacking them.
That didnât rule out all the dangers, though.
He took his seat, with Vasya standing in the space between his seat and Niathâs. Her four arms were folded, and her face was grim beneath her veil. He knew that she thought this world was evil and that they shouldnât tread here, but they had no choice.
âAlright,â he said, working the nerves from his voice and his bones. âLetâs get a scan going, see what weâre dealing with.
