Nine

Melody showered and dressed in the sweats that Dare had loaned her. She had already called an Uber to go home. Dare had offered to drive her but honestly how awkward would it be if anyone saw her getting out of his car?

She wasn’t prepared to deal with that. Not tonight and not tomorrow, either, she admitted to herself. She used the towel to dry her hair and then left the master bathroom after having a sniff of Dare’s aftershave. A part of her wanted to pretend that once she left his house everything was going to go back to her version of normal.

But even she had a hard time swallowing that lie. She knew that her life was going to be different.

And she’d wanted that.

She had been tired of always being the same Melody. This change was one she’d craved for a while now and she welcomed it. She was taking a personal risk, which she’d never done before. She’d always focused hard on the job, on winning, but this was something else. Dare was making her look at herself and her life with different eyes. And she had to admit it was exciting.

She wasn’t sure if it was exciting because she’d never done anything like this before or if it was something in Dare.

When she came back into the master bedroom, she noticed that Dare had put her sweaty gym clothes into a duffel bag embroidered with Moretti Racing logo on the side. She picked it up before heading downstairs and found him on the patio with Bailey, tossing a chewed-up tennis ball to the dog, who retrieved it and then waited for Dare to throw it again.

She just watched him being a normal dude for a few more seconds before she shook her head. She was too smart to fall for Dare Bisset. Senator Darien Bisset, who was on the opposite side of the issues from her. Who was in a different world than she was.

She repeated those sentences in her head like a litany, hoping that the message would stick but there was a part of her that wasn’t listening. And she knew it.

She could tell because when he turned and waved at her, she smiled and waved back. Then she stood there for a minute just smiling at him before she realized that she needed to snap out of it.

She was definitely going to call her brother as soon as she got home and let him talk some sense into her. Help her readjust and get back on track. But until then...

“Hello. I see you found the bag I put your stuff in,” he said.

“Thanks. Why do you have a Moretti Racing bag? Are you a fan of Formula One?”

“I’m not a fan. My sister’s fiancé is a driver. Inigo Velasquez,” he said. “Not sure if you’re a fan.”

“I’m not but my dad is. Wow, this is the second person who’s related to you that my family would completely lose their shit over,” she said, then realized how silly that might sound.
