I set my phone down and grinned at Callie across the way. Bright and early Tuesday morning, no human should have smiled as large as mine beamed. “That was the condo complex. I can move in this weekend!”

Callie threw her arms up in the air. “That’s awesome. You totally lucked out.”

Surprisingly, and much to my delight. While the condo I loved was out of my desired price range, it was still feasible. That it was empty, all the better. A week’s extra rent was worth the price to pay to be able to finally get out of the hotel room and be able to finally make a place a home. Which meant I had a lot of work to do.

“Oh my gosh. I’ll need to go shopping.” I hadn’t even considered. “There’s an IKEA here, right? Because I need everything, down to silverware organizers. The works.”

Callie threw her head back and laughed. “Of course there is. But you better look into renting a moving truck or something if you head there. Sounds like you’re going to need it.”

“On it. And thanks. My mom was happy, but I know my family is still nervous I’m here, so thanks for being excited with me.”

“Happy employees are better employees,” she teased me with a wink. After a few short weeks of working with Callie, I learned she was rarely serious outside of job duties. “You should tell your dad.”

“Ugh. Thanks for bursting my happy balloon.” I poked my tongue out at her.

“Sorry.”

“It’s nothing. I suppose I should tell him, though. At least so they know the hotel room will be opening up.”

With the trade deadline less than two months away and the whispers I’d heard about potential trades in the works, he’d need it.

“Right.” She rolled her eyes. “Because Vik would only care about the room being available. Not your welfare.”

I shot her a doubtful look that said it all.

In an uncharacteristic moment of seriousness, Callie tilted her head to one side. “I know you two barely have a relationship, but have you considered the fact he’s trying? And that he cares even if he’s been shitty at showing it? He did offer to go look at apartments with you, didn’t he?”

“I’m trying not to get my hopes up.”

“Understandable. But opening the door an inch wide wouldn’t hurt too much, would it?”

She was right. I knew she was. I also knew Vik was trying. He didn’t have to try to have lunch with me. He didn’t have to pay for my dinner the other night. And he didn’t have to offer to help me find a place. He was doing all the right little things to show his effort.

None of it negated the last twenty-three years of my life, but at some point, didn’t I have to accept his attempts to heal the breach as true desire to want to get to know me if we had any chance?

“I’ll go talk to him.”

“Thatta girl. Now shoo….” She opened her office door and waved me out like an annoying fly.
