Chapter Twenty-Seven

When Drew silently snuck through the palace grounds, fully aware that it was almost impossible to go anywhere without being noticed by at least half the guards around the impressive kingly residence, his heart was galloping in his throat in a mad sprint. Only a couple of turns in the path that wound through the forests behind the palace, and he’d be there and find his sister.

Of course, Valyn had snuck out to see her. How could he not? And if Drew was lucky, she’d still be there. Judging by the changing color of the skies, she might still be. It was near sundown, and Valyn had just returned.

Instinctively, Drew sped up a bit until he could make out the sound of falling water.

It took half a minute longer to reach the lake beneath the Fae falls, and he couldn’t help but marvel at the water the way he had that first time he’d come here.

A glance around the lake told him that there was no one there. Of course not. He was too late.

“Gandrett,” he called out her name as he stepped closer to the water.

In response, no sound other than the stream of water from the rocks behind the lake disturbed the silence.

Drew continued a couple of steps closer to the waterfall, remembering Gandrett’s message.

Meet me at the Fae Falls before sundown.

Maybe she had meant right by the falls.

Eyes on the water, Drew made his way forward until a hand on his shoulder almost made him tumble into the clear lake.

“Gandrett?” He spun under the touch and found himself facing not his sister but a familiar pair of brown eyes that he remembered having last seen above ornately decorated finery.

Now, they were staring at him from a plain, dark, hooded cloak, filled with a hint of surprise alongside malicious glee.

“Now look at that,” the Lord of Autumn purred as he pinned Drew against the nearest tree with his magic, “And there I thought getting my hands on the king would be a catch. But this”—he gestured at Drew—“is even better.”

Kepha’s words of needing his knife flashed through his mind, and he tried to remember where he’d put it.

On his belt, of course. Where else?

But his hands were tucked to his sides by the same force that held the rest of him in place.

“Lyrrin Stesea,” Drew acknowledged his captor with gritted teeth. “I have to admit your handwriting is fairly girlish.” Not that it mattered now that he hadn’t even thought to compare the note to the writing in the message Gandrett had sent with the horse all those months ago. But he was almost certain it looked very different.

“Who were you expecting to find?” The Fae male laid a thoughtful finger to his lips as he surveyed his catch.

“Not you for sure,” Drew hissed and strained against the invisible bonds. Air magic, he had learned. A hard layer of air wrapping itself around an item. He’d seen it in use in court for different purposes, such as making items float or sealing out others from conversations.
