“THOSE BOYS are something else,” Dustin said once they returned to the hotel room, full from appetizers, steak, potatoes, and then ice cream like Richard promised. Fortunately, the heat had abated some once the sun went down, and after their ice cream, both boys had fallen asleep in their parents’ arms and stayed that way the entire ride back to the hotel.

“They’re great kids.” Marshall sat on the edge of the bed. “That Oliver is so smart. The way he picks up on things is astonishing.” He got his boots off and lay back on the covers, arms spread out like the entire bed was his.

“Yeah,” Dustin agreed quietly, plopping into the chair near the wall of windows. The room was high up enough that the curtains were open, the lights of the city spread out below. Marshall wondered if Dustin was extra tired and figured it was best if he got ready for bed. He stripped out of his clothes and changed into a pair of light sleep pants, then sat on the bed and turned on the television. Dustin was still in the chair, staring out the windows. “If there was something you could go back and change, what would it be?”

Marshall shrugged. “I don’t know. I think I’d try to see where things got so hard between us and try to put a stop to it. Maybe get you those stop-snoring strips or just learn to ignore the sound and stay closer to you.” Because that had started them down the path they were trying to get off of now. “Why this trip into ‘what if’ land?”

Dustin smiled. “It’s nothing. Just me being stupid.” He went into the bathroom and closed the door. Marshall followed him with his gaze, wondering if it was more than that. But the television caught his attention before Dustin came out, and he laughed at the antics of eleven-year-old Sheldon as Dustin emerged and joined him on the bed. Marshall took his hand, and they lay there side by side. When Dustin rolled over, pulling his hand away, Marshall shifted as well just so he could stay in contact with him, tamping down his nerves. Marshall wanted this weekend to go well, because he wanted to be part of this world again. He was just afraid that Dustin would say no.
