Chapter Fourteen

The start of Josh’s leave was fast approaching, and yet all he could think about was Elena. He tried his best to buckle down and focus on his work, but all he saw in his mind was the look on her face as she told him—she had a daughter.

They had a daughter. And their daughter was about to turn ten years old.

Sitting in his office, staring at his computer screen, Josh shook his head for the thousandth time since leaving Elena’s house. “There’s no way,” he muttered to himself. “There’s just no way. Right?” He sat back in the chair and ran his fingers through his hair. “She would’ve told me before now if it was real.”

Is this her idea of a prank? Josh had spent days wondering, and the very idea of it filled him with anger and hurt. Maybe he’d read her completely wrong after all, and she wasn’t the sweet, innocent girl he thought she was in Brazil. And what was all that stuff about that message? I never blocked her.

Wait. Suddenly, Josh remembered the girl he’d started dating just shortly after he came back from Brazil. In the beginning, she seemed like a fun rebound fling, a good way to forget that he was five thousand miles away from the woman who could be his soulmate. Things had changed quickly. She was paranoid and always looking through his phone messages and social media. God. Maybe Elena is right. In which case he had made an even bigger fool of himself than he thought.

Josh’s gut told him Elena wasn’t a villain. He couldn’t make himself truly believe that she’d lied maliciously for nearly a decade on the off chance they’d meet again someday in a city five thousand miles away. She wouldn’t have been able to hide it from him. Not after they were so intimate.

Unable to concentrate on work, Josh pulled out his phone and opened his texts with Elena. There had been no communication between them at all since that disastrous night, a situation for which Josh mostly blamed himself in hindsight. Yes, she totally dropped a bombshell on him. No, it wasn’t fair of her. But he was the one who’d flown off the handle and stormed out of the house.

If I could’ve just chilled out a little, we might be talking right now, and I could explain. Not that Elena would want to hear about any of his exes. He could just see her disapproving frown. Haven’t I hurt her enough?

Josh looked at his phone screen for a long time before his fingers started typing. He wrote out the one thought that burned constantly in his mind: We need to talk.

His thumb hovered over the send button, but he didn’t dare press it. That one simple action would definitely open a Pandora’s box Josh wasn’t sure he was prepared for.

“Hey.” A knock at his open office door jolted Josh back into the present moment. He slipped his phone into his pocket and looked up as Nick leaned across the threshold.
