Chapter 5

Two days later, Alyssa still hadn't seen or heard from Jason since he stormed out. He was so angry when he left and he hadn’t returned any of her phone calls. She had finally given up when she realized he didn't want to talk to her. She was done. It was up to him now. She refused to beg a man to talk to her.

She sat at the desk in her office staring at the computer screen, not really seeing the words. She was supposed to be working on her latest manuscript. Her publisher was going to pitch a fit if she didn't finish it on time as promised.

Maddie poked her head in the door. "Matt is on the phone for you."

"I didn't hear the phone ring."

"I don't doubt that. You've been in a fog ever since your fight with Jason. Want to tell me what it was about?"

"I don't want talk about it, Maddie."

Maddie shrugged her shoulders. "Suit yourself. Don't forget the phone."

She wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone. If she didn't answer the phone, Matt would come over and she wasn't in the mood for company.

She picked up the phone reluctantly. "Hi, Matt. How are you?"

"I'm fine, sweetie. What's going on? Maddie said you're down in the dumps."

"Maddie has a big mouth. It's nothing. I'll work it out."

"Does it have anything to do with Jason? You did tell him there's nothing going on between you and me?"

"I tried. He wouldn't listen. We had a big blow-up and he walked out. I haven't seen or heard from him. And he won't take any of my calls. I'm done. If he wants to talk to me he has the number."

"I feel responsible. Is there anything I can do?"

"No, it will work out."

"Okay. Call me if you need me."

"Thanks, I will." She hung up the phone.

Alyssa rested her head on back of her black leather chair. She was so tired. Alex had been fussy the last two nights. It was as if he missed Jason.

She couldn't concentrate on writing. She would take a nap until Alex woke up. She shut down her computer and went upstairs to check on him before going to her room. He was sleeping like a little angel.

She touched his little cheek. Don't worry, sweetheart. Daddy hasn't forgotten you. He's just mad at mommy. He'll come and see you soon. Maybe she was trying to convince herself. She had no way of knowing what Jason would do in regards to Alex.

She took off her clothes and slid under the cool sheets. It felt so good to lie down. She would just close her eyes for a little while. Five minutes later, she was fast asleep.
