THE NEXT FEW WEEKS were, well, normal. David and his friends hung out now pretty much all of the time with Stacy and my friends, so I saw him all of the time. Lunch time would find all of us cracking jokes, insulting each other, and flirting. Oh, boy, was there ever a lot of flirting going on, and not only David. Shane ended up asking out my friend Chantel, and I thought they made a cute couple.

“Is it weird, since you went out with Shane?” Stacy asked, just before spring break.

I shook my head. “No. I liked him, but we just went out a few times. Who am I to stand in the way of true love?”

“Hmm.”

“What does that mean?”

“You know I love you, right? So don’t kill me when I say this.” Stacy took a deep breath. “Could you be standing in your own way of true love?”

I took my own deep breath, and released it. “Maybe?”

“Well, you took that better than I thought you would.”

“I’ve thought about it for weeks now, ever since I told David how I wasn’t over how he hurt me. I meant that and that we could be friends, but now, I don’t know.”

“Look, I’m not trying to minimize how he hurt you, but it was three years ago. Boys our age are immature, compared to us. Sometimes boys are stupid. You and I both know it.”

I rolled my eyes.

Stacy continued. “What I’m trying to say is—can you see yourself with my brother now? Well? No pressure, but huh, huh?”

If I couldn’t be honest with my best friend, then who was left? “Yeah,” I said quietly.

“So if he asks you out again, will you say yes?”

Cue my blush. “Considering I think we’re now in a friend zone of my own making, sure. Let’s go down that route. What do you think you’re doing?” I shrieked the last part when I realized that Stacy was texting like mad.

She evaded my swipe for her phone. “You’ll thank me by naming your firstborn child in a few more years.”

“I am going to kill you, Stacy Blanco!”

Her phone beeped. Her face dropped when she read what David had written.

“What? What’s wrong?”

“He told me to stay out of it.”

I couldn’t help my grin. “Really?”

“You don’t need to look so happy about it. I’m just trying to get my favorite two people in the world together. Is that too much to ask?”

I stroked her hair. “There, there. One day you’ll be able to start a matchmaking business where you’ll realize your full potential.”

Stacy knocked my hand off of her hair. “Very funny.” Her bottom lip jutted out.

“I know, I’m hilarious. You’re just now figuring this out?”

“So are you going to stop whining about how David broke your heart?”

I gasped. “That’s a little bit mean, don’t you think?”

She scrunched up her nose. “Doesn’t mean it isn’t a little bit true,” she sang.

I sighed, then threw up my hands. “Fine! You’re right! You’re right!”

“You’re just now figuring this out?”

“Aaargh!” I grabbed my pillow and walloped my best friend right upside her head.
