LEON STOOD ON the edge of the sidewalk. For some reason he didn’t seem willing to step on the Stones’ lawn. Probably because of the few hours Patch had spent behind bars. Couldn’t blame him. Still, Patch appreciated him being brave enough to show up at all.

“It’s not so bad here.” Leon leaned from side to side like it was impossible for him to stand still. “Just go with the flow.”

Maybe the guy was right. Patch had had the chance to run but decided to head back to the Stones. To try to work things out. He scratched at the itchy ankle clamp. “So Denny couldn’t make it?”

“Said it wasn’t God’s will that he hang out with you.” Leon looked down. “Gotta run.”

What could Patch do? He waved as his friend left.

It might be God’s will for things to keep on keepin’ on. Nothing different in his routine. Besides, if he’d tried to run he’d be in worse trouble than ever.

Patch pulled at the plastic grasping his leg. Trapped. Alone. Thankfully, the Stones were still civil to him and he had plenty of food.

What more could he want?

ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER chance to stare at Marty’s face. Granger couldn’t get rid of him. Now that the guy understood the power of the demon ring, he wanted to stick close.

“Can I use it?” he said. “C’mon, when can I borrow it?”

“When you’re ready. It’s not a toy.” Despite the constant, annoying questions, given Marty’s military training, Granger didn’t mind having him around. Maybe he could help protect Hope from Barry. He had to find her. She hadn’t been at school the past two days. And Granger was worried.

Finally he asked the ring to help and immediately felt led to try the mall. “Come on, Marty.”

They had been there less than a minute when she appeared, looking incredible as always.

Granger dove in. “You know that guy, Barry?”

She nodded. “Nice guy. Kind of cute.”

“This may sound strange, but I think he’s a demon.”

“What in the world are you talking about? Demons aren’t real.” She snuggled into his arm.

Granger told her how he had worked a deal with a devil named Trevor and gotten his ring. “With it I can read minds. And more.”

Marty nodded, obviously in awe of Hope. Who wouldn’t be? The girl was out-of-this-world beautiful.

At the moment, though, she looked doubtful.

“All you have to do is look through the center of the ring,” Granger said. “You’ll see what’s really there—including a demon.”

Hope looked shocked. “Sounds like quite a tool.”

“Here’s how it works.” Granger held the ring toward Hope’s face. She jumped back. “Don’t worry. I’ll hold on to it.” She still seemed jittery. “I’ll test it on Marty so you can see there’s no problem.” Granger aimed his mini-window. “Any demons?”

Marty grinned and waved.

“I don’t see anything,” Granger said.

Hope smiled and held out her hand. “Can I see it?”

What could he do? She wanted it, so he handed it over. “It definitely works. I’ve seen it.”

After examining the ring, she clamped it tightly in her palm.
