The scrolls are stored in a cabinet-like structure known as the Ark or the Holy Ark, which is usually in front of the sanctuary and placed on the eastern wall so that when the congregation is facing the Ark, it is facing the holy city of Jerusalem. The Holy Ark is opened only during special prayers and when removing the scrolls during services. The scrolls at Temple de Hirsch were secured by David Kaufman, whose daughter, Sara, was the first Jewish child born in Seattle. (Courtesy of Temple de Hirsch Sinai.)
