Later, George knocked briskly on Cassie’s door before entering for dinner. He was immediately assaulted by Gina, running toward him for a giant hug before showing him a drawing she’d made for him. He fussed over it, even though he had no idea what it was supposed to be other than big pink and purple blobs. Hard to believe that a month ago, he hadn’t even known his daughter existed. Now, he loved her so much it hurt. He put Gina down and looked over to find Cassie watching them from the table, smiling and happy. George was happy too. Happier than he’d been in a long, long time.

After dinner, Gina went off to her room with her nanny and George lingered at the table with Cassie as they finished off a fine bottle of merlot alone.

“Did I tell you Beck offered me a job?” he asked, topping off their glasses. “Long-term, after we catch the assassin.”

“Oh.” Her expression went neutral, and his stomach fell. He’d been hoping for a little more enthusiasm about the idea. “What did you say?”

He shrugged, careful not to reveal the growing tension inside him. “I told him I’d think about it. I mean, if I stayed on with the guard, it would let me be an ongoing part of Gina’s life.”

Be a part of yours too.

When she didn’t say anything, he asked, “What do you think?”

Cassie was quiet for a while and George lived and died in that small eternity. Finally, she said, “I want you to be a part of our daughter’s life. I know it would mean a lot to her, too. But if you stay on here, and the two of us remain involved, it increases the chances that someone will find out about us eventually. And if I get caught in an affair with one of my employees…”

She looked so troubled that he couldn’t help reaching over to gently take her wrist. “Hey, it’s okay. I won’t take the job, then. We’ll figure something else out.”

“Okay.” She nodded, then kissed him. “Thank you.”

He smiled, doing his best to seem okay with it even though he wasn’t. How could she want him to stay for Gina and not her? And could he accept that if it never changed? Could he live here and continue on as her perpetual dirty secret? He didn’t want a relationship in the public eye—but could he stand to be with her only at night, tucked away like he didn’t really matter? How would that make him feel, year after year, loving her and knowing he’d never have her, not really?
