USS MUSTIN

Near Wake Atoll, the Pacific Ocean

Following a briefing from the ship’s captain to all officers of the USS Mustin, Ensign Jansen better understood why his ship was sent to what seemed to him the remotest place on Earth—Wake Island. In their briefing, they were told the Secretary of Defense had directed the dispersal of military forces in case of a conflict with the PRC. So, USINDOPACOM ordered the Mustin to patrol off the shores of Wake to add a layer of protection for B-1Bs and a multitude of other aircraft heading to the island. Located between Japan and Hawaii, fifteen hundred miles from Guam, it was chosen as the fallback center in case of war. Considerable construction was just being completed on the 9,800-foot runway and surrounding parking apron. One of the benefits of being so remote was that Wake was virtually out of the range of every ballistic missile in the PLARF’s inventory.

In the opening hours of the battle with the PRC, the war was proving to be incredibly violent and fast-moving, with US bases in Okinawa, Guam, and others in the Indo-Pacific region being struck by missiles fired from the Chinese mainland. Worst of all, the United States had lost five of its eleven carriers, although the USS Nimitz was trying to stay in the fight. The Mustin was at continuous GQ, expecting incoming missiles at any moment—they just didn’t know from where.
