Chapter 21

Trauma and orthopaedic surgeon Dr Jamie Hunter drove along the coast road admiring the view. The brand-new powerful Range Rover Evoke effortlessly ate up the miles and Jamie let his mind wander. He had returned from the Sudan a few days earlier where he had been training army surgeons on new and emerging trauma surgery techniques. He had then gone to see his mother briefly in Liverpool, citing work as the reason he couldn’t stay for Christmas.

If the truth be known, he would like to pretend he had no family whatsoever, rather than the scrag-end chav his mother actually was. In his mind, the scummy council house she insisted on living in, surrounded by hideous time-wasting fat gobby chavs, was an environment he didn’t want to be associated with in any way whatsoever.

He had worked hard to lose the Liverpool accent; worked hard to rise above a childhood of penny pinching, shit food, second-hand clothes, no father, and a pissed mother who lived on cheap cider, processed food and cigarettes. He had never brought anyone home to visit, and had only been home four times in the last six years.

He’d worked hard to get a scholarship in order to attend university, leaving home and never looking back. He was committed to his work, and it was the only thing he was truly passionate about. He lived in constant hope that his mother would die and then he would never have to return to that area again. He dreamt of a time when she died, and he would rock up, toss a petrol bomb in her house, and walk away. It would be a fitting Tarantino-style ending to his shit childhood.

His mind wandered to where he was going. He was on his way to see Carla Fox. He liked Carla, he found her bright, attractive and excellent company. They had gone out a couple of times, but Carla had resisted his advances since she was still involved with someone else. He remembered the last time he had seen her. No more had she resisted his advances. He was pleased that she clearly had no recollection of what he’d done. It was like looking at someone and knowing a deliciously wicked secret.

He had carefully inspected every inch of her body when she lay unconscious and yielding. He had taken her more than once and enjoyed the feeling that he had the power and she could do nothing about it. He felt he knew her. Every inch of her. Despite this, he was drawn to her. He liked her and felt she would be fun to have while she was awake, hence his efforts in coming to see her.

While she had been unconscious, Jamie had activated her phone and installed the find my device software; which is how he knew she had been in Castleby for the past few days. He suspected it was a small town and he would find her fairly easily. He’d searched for somewhere to stay and found an exclusive hotel on the cliffs overlooking the town and booked himself in for a few nights.
