Tara's stomach was filled with a sense of anticipation, but also anxiety, as she walked into the bank. Seagrove only had one bank, so everybody banked there including her grandmother. It was nice to be in such a small town that there was only a need for one bank. No big chains, just this little community bank that had been there for decades.

The lobby was cool and air-conditioned, a prerequisite for the South Carolina Lowcountry going into the summer. It provided a brief respite from the Seagrove sun that was hanging overhead in the sky already in the early morning hours.

She walked up to one of the tellers, an older woman she slightly recognized who had been working there for as long as Tara could remember.

"Hi. I'm here to get access to my grandmother's safe deposit box. She passed away recently."

The woman's face softened. "Oh, yes, we're all going to miss Myra. She was a wonderful woman. Baked the best chocolate cake in town, but don't tell SuAnn at Hotcakes that I said that," the woman whispered, smiling.

She had always wanted to work hard and make her own way in the world. Unfortunately, that had taken her away from Seagrove for such a long time that now she felt guilty that she didn't spend enough of that time with her grandmother.

After verifying her identification and completing a couple of pieces of paperwork, the bank attendant, whose name tag said Susan, led her to the vault. There was a click sound of the security mechanism that echoed in the quiet bank, and then they were inside the vault. Susan handed her a small key and nodded and then left her in privacy. Tara sucked in a deep breath before turning the key in the lock, her heart pounding. The box slid out with a gentle scraping sound, and then she walked over and sat it on a table nearby, sitting down in front of it and staring at it.

She opened the top, and it revealed just a few personal items. Her grandmother's gold wedding band, her grandmother's bible and then a journal. It had a dark, rich leather cover on it, and it didn't look very old. She opened it up, noticing that the pages were pretty crisp and white. This wasn't something that her grandmother had kept for a long time. Tara closed the journal before she
