Chapter Twenty-Two

Sabrina thought about nothing but Scream Site for the rest of the night, even though she should’ve been enjoying herself. First there were tacos for dinner, which were her favorite, then a round of board games, since they hadn’t played any in a while. Sabrina loved Clue and Monopoly, but she was only half paying attention as they played. Mostly her brain was trying to decide whether everyone was right about giving up on the Scream Site story.

She was no detective; she was just a girl in high school, trying to write an amazing internship application. Maybe she should give up on this idea and write an article about something safe and boring, like the health benefits of avocados. She might be wasting her time chasing this Scream Site thing when she should be working on a hundred other things. Hadn’t she already forgotten her algebra homework earlier this week? She had to get her life back on track.

And she told herself she should probably just forget about Asher Grey. Did she really think a boy she went to school with could have anything to do with a missing girl? And how exactly would he have orchestrated such a feat in between volunteering at animal shelters and being star student at school? It didn’t make any kind of sense.

Maybe it was all just a massive coincidence. It was possible Mariann had run away, as everyone but her sister seemed to believe. And maybe someone had used a random picture of Asher Grey from some website. Sabrina might only be seeing anything suspicious because she wanted it to be some kind of big conspiracy — because it would be a journalist’s dream scoop. Her brain told her she should focus on a different story, one that would actually turn out to be something more than just a bunch of random gossip based on guesses and hunches.

But her gut told her something else.

She couldn’t stop investigating. Even if it was all a hoax, it could still be a great story for her application, and it would prove that she could follow a lead to its conclusion. And, if the Scream Site rumors were true and Mariann Sanchez had been kidnapped because of the website, then there were real lives at stake, and that was much more important than any internship.

So then the question was: What next?

Sabrina went back and forth over all this during the night of family fun, all the way until she drifted off to sleep, and again as she went through her classes the next day, including Wembley’s fourth hour English class.

“Sabrina, how is your story coming? The one on Terror Site?” Mrs. Wembley asked after class, just as Sabrina was about to step outside the door.

Sabrina’s slouched and turned back around to face her. “It’s going OK,” she said, the lie making her stomach knot.

Mrs. Wembley smiled, the corners of her eyes crinkling. She looked more energized today, and it made Sabrina feel a little less bad for lying to her.
