Sinclair was quiet as they set off.

“Your instinct was right,” he said, looking across at her. “We should have moved on this sooner.”

“You put out an APB. You did all you could under the circumstances.”

He gave a grunt. Sinclair knew as well as he did that every minute a person was missing decreased their likelihood of being found alive.

Savage fixed his eyes on the road. “We’ll put everything we’ve got into finding her.”

“I know.” She turned away. “When my sister went missing, we feared the worst. If she hadn’t managed to escape…”

“How did she get away?”

“She escaped through a window, but that’s all I know.” She clutched her hands together in her lap. “She never spoke about what happened. Not to me, not to my parents, not to the police.”

“Did they ever find the guy?” he asked.

“They think so. A couple of months later, another young teenager went missing, but she had a cellphone on her. The police managed to track her to some guy’s house, and he was arrested. He had her tied to the bed.”

Savage grimaced. “Didn’t your sister ID him?”

“No, she didn’t even go to the trial. I think she just wanted to put it behind her. Going to court would have reopened those wounds.”

He could understand that.

“That’s why we have to find Crystal,” she continued. “There’s no telling what she’s going through right now.”

Savage didn’t want to think about it. “We will.”
