The “f,” “l,” “s” Doubling Rule

The “f,” “l,” “s” doubling rule is a spelling rule that states that when an “f,” “l,” or “s” immediately follows a short vowel, the “f,” “l,” or “s” must be doubled. When most consonants immediately follow a short vowel, the single consonant is all that is required, as in “whim,” “wet,” and “hid.”

Note that all three of the words contain a short vowel. Yet, only one consonant is found immediately following the short vowel. However, in the following examples, the “f,” “l,” “s” doubling rule is applied because the “f,” “l,” and “s” come immediately after the short vowel: “whif,” “well,” and “hiss.” Here are further examples of the “f,” “l,” “s” doubling rule: “stress,” “huf,” “grill,” “staff,” “dress,” and “thrill.”

A full list of various words that can be used to teach the “f,” “l,” “s” doubling rule to students can be found at http://www.prufrock.com/assets/clientpages/schoolsuccessdyslexia.aspx.
