Chapter 15

True to the fairy’s word, when Talamaya reached the house of the witch, stone statues littered the yard of men, women, two dwarfs, and even two children. Talamaya dismounted from her horse and walked her through the statue garden. What if she could bring Mexia back here with her and set the people free?

That’s what Talamaya wished to do more than anything in the world. But if they did so and the witch caught them, then what? All would be lost. Her knights, King Lazarion and his men, Mexia, and the peoples populating the whole continent could suffer at the hands of the maniacal wizard.

But wasn’t setting them free, the right thing to do?

She turned her attention toward the one-story house. Despite the lateness of the hour, candles flickered in the two windows of the pink-stone home.

Even though there were no trees nearby, moss covered every square inch of the roof. No flowers, no shrubs, nothing softened the harshness of the stone statues. Talamaya shivered. She couldn’t shake the desire to free the people.

Letting go of her horse’s reins, she stepped onto the wooden porch and raised her hand to the door. Before she could knock, the door opened.

Inside a woman stood as beautiful as a Mesa elf, tall, slender, with golden curls resting all the way to her hips, ivory skinned, and blue-eyed, but no pointed ears. Her gown shown as brightly as the golden rays of the sun. Talamaya closed her gaping mouth to hide her ignorance. She’d assumed the woman would be wickedly ugly and hideously mean. But the woman smiled sweetly and motioned for her to come in.

Talamaya closed the door behind her and crossed the stone floor.

“You are?”

“Princess Talamaya from Damar.”

“Yes. You are.”

“And you are?”

“Did the fairy not tell you? I am the mean-spirited witch.” She smiled.

“Your name?”

“Margina.”

“You know what I have come for then, if you know the fairy sent me here.”

“To steal from me.” Margina poured a blue substance into two goblets. “Share some minko tea with me.”

“I would not steal from you.” Talamaya took hold of the goblet. “I had fully intended to ask you for the comb, if you would graciously give it. If not, I would tell the fairy, you wouldn’t give the comb to me.”

Margina gave her a sly smile and waved at two stone seats. Once they sat, she pointed to a table. “You see on that table are forty-two combs. You may have any one of them.”

“But the fairy wants one that is perfect for her hair.”

“Since you have been so honest with me, something my other visitors were not, I’ll give you any of the combs to take back to the fairy. But I must warn you, if you don’t choose the correct one, she’ll fly into a rage. No telling what she’ll do. She can be very spiteful.”

“I know the comb is not hers.”

Margina smiled. “Do you now?”

“Yes, that’s why I could not steal it. It isn’t hers to have unless you wished to make a gift of it to her.
