Fishing Bridge to West Thumb

General description: A visit to a beautiful old hotel in a pristine setting, and a 21-mile tour along the forested western shore of Yellowstone Lake to a fascinating geyser basin nestled along the shoreline.

Driving time: About 45 minutes.

Special attractions: Old and elegant Lake Hotel, Bridge Bay Marina, and West Thumb Geyser Basin.

Location: South-central region of the park.

Drive route names & numbers: Grand Loop Road from Fishing Bridge to West Thumb.

Travel season: Early May through Oct or early Nov, depending on weather conditions.

Camping: RV park at Fishing Bridge, operated by Xanterra, first-come, first-served (325 sites); campground at Bridge Bay, also Xanterra, reservations required (432 sites); and a Xanterra-operated campground at Grant Village just beyond West Thumb, first-come, first-served (430 sites).

Services: Full services at Lake Village, including a hospital. Full services also at Grant Village, just south of West Thumb. Sporadic cell service along this drive.

Nearby points of interest: Natural Bridge, Stevenson Island.
