W hile Jack Webber was gloating at the prospect of getting his own back on his ex-wife, Martha was working the phone. All morning she had been calling her friends in the media, pumping the launch of voice recognition software.

“Does it work, Martha? Can’t print a story about something that doesn’t work.”

“Contact Linguare and ask them for a publicity pack. It’s going to revolutionise the world. No more keyboards and typing. You’ll love it.”

“Thanks for telling me.”

“My pleasure.”

After completing her list, repeating the same story all day, she had had enough of the office.

“Can’t do anymore. Time to go home.”

“Do you always talk to yourself, Martha?”

“Hello, Franklyn. Must have made over two hundred phone calls today right across the country. Nothing better than the personal touch. Direct contact.”

“Joanne is having a little dinner party tomorrow. Will you and Phillip come? I’ve invited Jack and Jasmine. Jack’s bringing a girlfriend. You fly off on holiday the next day. A nice little send-off. Jack’s presenting his report to Liberty Soups tomorrow morning. Should be told if they are coming across to us. How is Gerta getting on?”

“Just great. If she’s anything like Jaz she will be a credit to me… What time tomorrow?”

“Seven-thirty.”

“Is Jaz bringing Marcin?”

“We’ll all be at the party. Go home to Phillip and get some rest. Never forget your baby.”

“It’s been wonderful putting the company together.”

“All worked perfectly. Tomorrow night will be fun. One big, happy family. What makes for a good business. Harmony in the workplace. That’s what I strive for.”

Back on the forty-ninth floor of their apartment, Martha stood looking out of the big plate-glass window in the living room, the whole of New York spread out in front of her. There was no sign of Phillip. Instead of going to the gym she made herself coffee and returned to the window to think. The Linguare.com account was safely theirs, Jack had one more to go to reach ten million dollars in annual billings, getmethatbook, the new Perry Mance start-up, was developing nicely, as were a string of new accounts. Despite trying to look on the bright side of life, the fear came back again, a cold, terrible fear running right through her body, making her feel physically sick. Was she again going to lose her baby, her body inherently unable to give birth? A cold sweat broke out on her brow and around her neck. Her hands began to shake, slopping her coffee. Her whole stomach was gripped by contraction. Putting the palm of her free hand to the cold glass of the window, she tried to steady herself. Slowly, the noise of New York came back to her consciousness as her hand slipped down the window and Martha sank to her knees. If she lost the baby this time she would kill herself. This time there would be no old lady across the way to give her a friendly wave and stop her from falling. Despite what she said to Phillip, she knew he wanted to go back to Africa to his life along the banks of the Zambezi River.
