13 THE MORNING AFTER AND MOMENT OF TRUTH

Scary groaned as he pulled the pillow over his head to block out the morning sun streaming through the balcony doors. They’d forgotten to close the curtains before they went to bed. His mouth pulled into a half-smile as the slender body curled up to his back. He turned to glance over his shoulder and saw Tank completely wrapped around Elijah, Elijah’s forehead was pressed between Scary’s shoulder blades. Tossing the pillow over the side of the bed, he rolled over to watch Elijah sleep.

Elijah’s curls tangled around his face and dark lashes laid on his high cheekbones. The man was fucking beautiful. He wondered what the hell he and Tank did right. Scary lifted his hand, put his palm on Elijah’s cheek and traced the long, fringe of lashes with the pad of his thumb. Elijah hummed in his sleep and turned into his touch, brushing a gentle kiss to his palm.

He’d noticed the tenderness with which he’d treated Tank and it wasn’t the first time he noticed. Elijah took advantage of every opportunity to touch them. It was an odd thing. No one touched either of them with anything close to reverence. Elijah wore his heart on his sleeve and he damn sure couldn’t disguise what he felt.

Scary was born to a single mother who worked her ass off to just put food on the table most nights. Monica barely turned seventeen before Scary made his way into the world. She’d been beautiful with rich, caramel colored skin and always laughing hazel eyes. No matter how tired his Mom was she wore a permanent smile. The man who knocked his mother up was rich and popular, a college boy who’d talked all sweet, but hadn’t stuck around long.

He didn’t give a fuck where the bastard was, but he wished his Mom could’ve met Elijah. Breast cancer took her before her fortieth birthday. Monica would’ve approved of Elijah. She’d always said he’d need a good man to keep him in line. He’d never been in the closet with her and she’d hated the necessity of keeping it quiet. His best friend hadn’t known until the night they’d decided to leave the neighborhood behind. Neither of them had a reason to stay.

His life went into freefall after his mother died. Part of him hadn’t cared whether he lived or died.

He dropped his hand from Elijah’s face. The memory of his ex came back. Callum was gorgeous with a penchant for slumming on the weekends. He hadn’t minded the occasional hookup, a hard fuck and a quicker goodbye until it turned into something else. It hadn’t been love, in his mid-twenties he wasn’t looking for permanent—well at least he hadn’t thought he was.

Stephen liked to tell his friends about the bad boy biker/tattoo artist. After a few years it started to feel as if he’d turned into some exotic fucking pet. Callum always talked about taking him home to meet the parents. Later he came to find out Callum had a man who was just as pretty and rich.
