Chapter 26

FATED TWICE

The unicorn’s white shining fur reflected the sun’s rays, and wisps of its white mane blew in the breeze. Large, brown eyes fixed on Ethan. Its tail thrashed to the side and its ears laid flat against its head.

The unicorn strode forward and pointed its glistening horn at Ethan’s chest. The animal was close enough to run him through with just a thrust of its head. Spiraled and iridescent, the horn glinted like a sharp blade. Ethan swallowed.

Shaking on the inside, he lowered his sword. “I need this plant.”

The growl rumbled again, vibrating the ground.

Ethan looked into the creature’s eyes. His words came out in a rush. “I, well, my friend has a friend who was wounded by a poisonous arrow. A Whisperer sent us to get a plant that looks like this one. I need it to save his life.”

The unicorn raised its head slightly, but Ethan recognized the gesture, and the feeling of umbrage vanished.

“Scout, did you call Logan?” Without moving his feet, Ethan turned to see his dog’s response. As he feared, the golden dog nodded. “You need to go to him. Stop them from coming here. Do you understand?”

Scout stayed put.

“I know Logan gave you orders, but this unicorn won’t like it if Westwind and the others come barging in here ready to fight. You have to trust me, boy. You’ve trusted me all along.”

At this, Scout’s gaze softened, and he turned and fled.

Once more Ethan faced the unicorn. “I think you can understand me.”

The opalescent creature stared at him, still pointing its horn in his direction.

“May I please take the plant? My dog has gone to try and stop the others from coming. If they see you ready to kill me, they’ll fight you. If I can just have this, we’ll leave.”

The unicorn’s eyes narrowed and its head lifted more this time, then its ears rose and its tail stopped thrashing. Ethan bent to the ground again, still eyeing the unicorn, and picked up his sword.

The growl started to resound again in the animal’s chest.

“I’ve got to dig it out.”

“Dash can dig it out for you.” A feminine voice startled him.

A beautiful young woman stood beside the unicorn with her hand on its shoulder. She hadn’t been there a moment ago. Heart pounding, Ethan scanned the area. No more strange people appeared from nowhere. Just her.

Her long blonde hair hung loose around her shoulders, and her eyes were blue—dark blue. Her smile was soft, but there was something impish about the curve of her lips.

She was shorter than Jayden, but her presence was commanding. Ethan wasn’t sure if it was the unicorn she stood next to, or if it was something else about her. Her touch seemed to calm the beast. She wore only white, and he noticed her skirts were divided for riding.

Riding what? A unicorn?

“My name is Serena.” She held out a delicate hand.

Ethan shook his clouded head. “Pleased to meet you.”

He rose, sheathed his sword, and took her hand in his.
