CHAPTER FIVE

OLIVIA

“Hey. Is the head improving?”

I spin on my heels as Rod comes up behind me and I almost jump out of my skin. I know Bailey said that he’d be coming for me, but I didn’t think she was being serious. I thought she meant that we would all be meeting for lunch, but obviously it looks like she’s ditched me. A flutter takes over my stomach, and when I turn to face him, he’s looking back at me with a megawatt smile on his face. Excitement course through my veins, but I can’t help but feeling a little lost. I hate not knowing what’s gonna happen next.

What am I supposed to do here? Do I make conversation, or do I just play it cool? Bailey could have at least helped me out a little. I’ve never been in this kind of situation before, and I don’t want to embarrass myself. I instantly remember Bailey making me promise that I wouldn’t say anything to him, and I’m not the type of person to break promises once I’ve made them. Plus, the thought of embarrassing myself further if she’d got it wrong is unbearable to think about.

Plus, for all I know this could be some kind of set-up. Rod could be pretending to be interested in me. This could be payback. After all, Taylor still has it in for me. She thinks that I’m the reason her and Kane broke up, but from what I’ve heard she was already doing the dirty on him well before I came alone. She’s already sowed the seed, and now Karma was coming back for her—twofold.

I watch Rod for a moment with wide eyes. I have no idea what I’m supposed to say and I’m not really sure what it is he wants from me. I quickly decide on playing it cool and I offer him a small smile. “Sore, but I’ll survive.” I’m playing it down and I think from the soft grin on his lips he knows this too.

“Now that’s what I’m talking about. A girl who can hold her own has the power to steal my heart.” His black eyes twinkle with excitement and I instantly feel the heat of my embarrassment rushing to my cheeks. There’s no way he hasn’t noticed it either.

“Is that so…” I laugh. “Then please tell me what attracted you to Taylor.” The words leave my mouth before I have a chance to stop them, and I instantly wish the ground would open up and swallow me whole. What the hell am I doing? Now he’s gonna think I’m a grade A bitch just like Taylor and that wasn’t my intention. I really wish that Bailey hadn’t said anything to me because now I feel really uncomfortable around him. Not in a bad way, just in a ‘I’m always going to mess up’ kind of way. After all, messing up is what I seem to do best.

I know I shouldn’t be making a big deal out this, but I’ve never really experienced what it feels like to have a guy being into me.
