“I don’t understand how you know when I’m here,” Dane said as Gray Warrior walked his horse quietly from the woods to the cedar tree where Dane waited.

“I know. What do you want of me?”

“I want to know about the missionaries. Have you found them?”

Gray Warrior peered at Dane through narrowed eyes. “No.”

There was never a change in his expression. There were times when Dane thought that the Ute warrior wasn’t telling him everything. But short of chancing a break in the relationship, he didn’t dare challenge the savage.

“I thought you knew everything that happened in these mountains.”

“We share this land claimed by the Arapaho, but my people live to the west. The mountains hide the secrets from those who do not belong. Like the white man.”

“You will continue to search?”

Gray warrior grunted his consent.

Dane studied the taciturn man, trying to decide how much he really knew, then decided that he had no choice but to voice the second question. “I want to know about that miner Alexander who prospects in the mountains. Can you tell me?”

“Alexander is dead, beneath the earth.”

“Dead? But there are others in his family?”

Gray Warrior nodded.

Dane gave a low curse. Why was it so hard to deal with the Indian? They’d had a relationship for months, each dependent on the other, each profiting from their ventures. Still, he had to draw out the facts one question at a time. “Tell me about Alexander’s son.”

“No son. Only women. Live in high valley with old man, who digs for gold.”

“Have you seen them?”

“I see.” He smiled broadly and rocked back and forth on the balls of his feet. “They had fine horses. Gray Warrior take.”

“But what about the woman’s husband? Tall, blond hair, beard, mustache. Silver eyes?”

Gray Warrior studied Dane shrewdly. “One man has silver eyes.”

Dane tried to conceal his excitement. It had to be Colter. “The prisoners, from the prison wagon, are they there?”

“There are four men, yes.”

It was Colter and his misfits. Dane had found them. They were still here. They could ruin everything. Why hadn’t they kept going? Now Dane would be forced to do something he didn’t want to do—get rid of them.

“I have another job for you, Gray Warrior. Take your men and capture the prisoners.”

Gray Warrior feigned indifference, but his question was anything but. “The shadow soldiers?”

“Shadow soldiers?”

“They hide in the night, wearing another man’s skin.”

“You mean they’re spies. Yes, they are. But how did you know they were soldiers?”

“Gray Warrior sees much. He knows when they came from the land in the south. He watched you turn away from them and become the man in the blue uniform. It is better that you now deal with Gray Warrior. Pay him in whiskey.”

“Fine. I’ll pay you. Just get them. Otherwise they can cause trouble for me. You wouldn’t want to end our little raids, would you?”

“I will think on it.”

Dane was surprised. So far Gray Warrior had never backed down, never shown any sign of fear. Rather, he’d seemed to relish the battle almost as much as the spoils.
