Here the proportionality parameter should be simply a differential parameter giving the measure of continuity of the differentials. If, for instance, equations (4.16) represent a motion, then this continuity parameter is the time of the kinematical problem describing this motion. However, equation (4.16) has a much more general interpretation, which can be intuitively understood based on idea of direction of sight from the daily life.

It is indeed an observation of daily experience that we cannot account directly for the motion of a remote material point, if this motion is done exclusively along the line of sight. In order to detect such a motion in this case we need still other physical means, like, for instance, changing in the apparent dimensions of the moving body or, if this observation is not possible because of distance, the spectral analysis of the light by the intermediation of which we perceive that body as a distant material point. Otherwise, any such characterization is out of question. In order to be possible to account directly — as the classical mechanics would demand — for the motion of a remote material point, this motion must have a component out of the line of sight. Equations (4.16) represent such a condition, expressed in pure differentials, for the differential displacement is unconditionally perpendicular to the line of sight:
