JONI DECIDED she would rather have a root canal while being forced to listen to the Muzak version of the Bee Gees’ greatest hits than sit through Friday night’s dinner with Carter and her family. Her parents and G.P. would be watching her every move for some sign of impending nuptials. Meanwhile she’d be avoiding looking at Carter, afraid she might give away the fact that while she wasn’t in love with him, she was definitely in lust.

The man in question looked particularly luscious tonight in a tailored black suit and white collarless shirt. She was wearing a demure blue dress with long sleeves and high collar, but any hope it might help cool things off between them was quelled the moment she opened the door to Carter. The slow drift of his gaze from her head to her toes turned her knees to jelly. “You look hot,” he growled.

“Um, so do you.”

She took a step back, but that only made him take a step forward. “Too bad we can’t stay here and have dessert first.”

“My mom gets very upset if her roast dries out.”

He faked a dramatic sigh. “Then we’d better get going.” He offered his arm. “But you owe me dessert later.”

“We’ll see.” An evening being interrogated by G.P. might be enough to quell any man’s ardor.

When they arrived, her mother greeted them at the door, bypassing Joni to envelop Carter in a hug. “We read in the paper about your accident. I’m so glad you’re okay.”

“My accident?” Carter gave Joni a questioning look. She shrugged.

“She means your bust-up with that car thief.” Her father came into the room. “Del, that was no accident. The man was doing his job.”

“The paper called you a hero.” G.P. joined them, putting her arm around Joni. “I’ll bet you were so proud.”

Joni stared at her shoes. Angry, upset, even terrified, but not particularly proud, no.

Carter slipped his arm around her waist. “Joni was with me when it happened. I think it shook her up a little.”

She guessed that was the diplomatic way to describe her feelings. Furious didn’t have quite the same ring to it.

“But everything worked out all right, didn’t it?” G.P. said.

“I’m fine.” Carter took his arm from around her and followed her into the living room. “It was really no big deal.”

“You’re too modest,” Joni’s mother insisted. She perched on the arm of Joni’s father’s chair, and G.P. settled into a rocker. That left the sofa for Joni and Carter. He sat uncomfortably close to her, his thigh touching hers. How was she supposed to talk coherently when he was so close, the memory of their love-making so fresh?

“Don’t they make a cute couple?” Joni’s mother said.

“They’re perfect for each other.” G.P. nodded. “I couldn’t have picked a better man for Joni myself.”

Well, that was the point, wasn’t it? Ten minutes after meeting Carter, Joni had known her grandmother would adore him. Even though he was the complete opposite of anyone she’d have picked for herself, she’d thought passing him off as her boyfriend would be a sure way to make G.
