JONI DECIDED she would rather have a root canal while being forced to listen to the Muzak version of the Bee Geesâ greatest hits than sit through Friday nightâs dinner with Carter and her family. Her parents and G.P. would be watching her every move for some sign of impending nuptials. Meanwhile sheâd be avoiding looking at Carter, afraid she might give away the fact that while she wasnât in love with him, she was definitely in lust.
The man in question looked particularly luscious tonight in a tailored black suit and white collarless shirt. She was wearing a demure blue dress with long sleeves and high collar, but any hope it might help cool things off between them was quelled the moment she opened the door to Carter. The slow drift of his gaze from her head to her toes turned her knees to jelly. âYou look hot,â he growled.
âUm, so do you.â
She took a step back, but that only made him take a step forward. âToo bad we canât stay here and have dessert first.â
âMy mom gets very upset if her roast dries out.â
He faked a dramatic sigh. âThen weâd better get going.â He offered his arm. âBut you owe me dessert later.â
âWeâll see.â An evening being interrogated by G.P. might be enough to quell any manâs ardor.
When they arrived, her mother greeted them at the door, bypassing Joni to envelop Carter in a hug. âWe read in the paper about your accident. Iâm so glad youâre okay.â
âMy accident?â Carter gave Joni a questioning look. She shrugged.
âShe means your bust-up with that car thief.â Her father came into the room. âDel, that was no accident. The man was doing his job.â
âThe paper called you a hero.â G.P. joined them, putting her arm around Joni. âIâll bet you were so proud.â
Joni stared at her shoes. Angry, upset, even terrified, but not particularly proud, no.
Carter slipped his arm around her waist. âJoni was with me when it happened. I think it shook her up a little.â
She guessed that was the diplomatic way to describe her feelings. Furious didnât have quite the same ring to it.
âBut everything worked out all right, didnât it?â G.P. said.
âIâm fine.â Carter took his arm from around her and followed her into the living room. âIt was really no big deal.â
âYouâre too modest,â Joniâs mother insisted. She perched on the arm of Joniâs fatherâs chair, and G.P. settled into a rocker. That left the sofa for Joni and Carter. He sat uncomfortably close to her, his thigh touching hers. How was she supposed to talk coherently when he was so close, the memory of their love-making so fresh?
âDonât they make a cute couple?â Joniâs mother said.
âTheyâre perfect for each other.â G.P. nodded. âI couldnât have picked a better man for Joni myself.â
Well, that was the point, wasnât it? Ten minutes after meeting Carter, Joni had known her grandmother would adore him. Even though he was the complete opposite of anyone sheâd have picked for herself, sheâd thought passing him off as her boyfriend would be a sure way to make G.
