Chapter Twenty

Emilia

Emilia was trained to save lives in a flick of a switch. She was proud to call herself a paramedic especially when she ignored Massimo and took charge. He was drifting off to sleep, slowly but surely. He was losing a lot of blood and and she was fully aware it was only time before he wouldn’t be able to close his eyes. She raced to the A&E, luckily for her the county roads leading to Sicily were quiet and they were lit well enough for her to speed through them and get him to the hospital.

She grabbed his arms as she drove, trying to pull him back to the present, “Massimo? Massimo, stay with me.”

She grabbed her phone and dialled Dr. Bianchi. It wouldn’t be long before she reached the hospital. It was precisely why she had to tell the doctor of Massimo’s state. He had to be ready to respond in emergencies.

He picked up instantly, “Dr. Bianchi speaking.”

“Doctor, it’s Emilia, the paramedic and carer of Massimo Mancini. He’s hurt himself. You need to come quickly. He’s barely clinging onto life and needs attention - I’ll do what I can in the meantime.”

“I’ll be right there. Do your job, paramedic,” came Dr. Bianchi’s gruff reply.

Emilia stopped at a red light and scanned Massimo’s wounds. His was slanted awkwardly on his side, no doubt due to her crazy driving an his bandage was unfolding.

The lights had turned green and there were no cars behind her so she lifted up Massimo’s gown gingerly, in the midnight light that came from the orange Sicily street lights streaming through the window. She could see Massimo’s supple skin, the wound an angry tear across his beautiful form. Feeling the need for more light, she sprung up from her seat and hastily switched on the main light, filling the room so she could get to work.

Emilia grabbed some gauze and applied pressure to the wound. Massimo kept stirring, going in and out of consciousness.

“Emilia…I’m sorry… it was an accident… I’m sorry… Emilia... I just… I had to see you…”

Emilia hushed him, “You focus on getting better right now Massimo. Save your energy. Dr. Bianchi will be here soon to treat you. There’s no need to worry about a thing.”

She zoomed off even though the traffic lights were blaring red. She didn’t care anymore, she had to save his life. Massimo would happily pay the fines on the car once he was better, she was sure of it because in her mind, she couldn’t allow him to die, not now, not ever.

Emilia reached the front of the A&E entrance where they had once met and ran out to the passenger seat, opening it wide. Dr. Bianchi ran to her with a stretcher and they both lifted Massimo on it.

“We need to get him to the Mancini Wing now!” Dr. Bianchi yelled with concern. The zoomed through the hospital corridor weaving through patients and workers and the elevator was open waiting for Massimo to arrive.

Emilia was
