Chapter 11
Daryl pulled Sloan closer. The wind whipped around them, blowing napkins and cups. Luckily nothing dangerous had hit.
Then a sharp crack was followed by the tinkling sound of glass cascading to the floor. He tucked Sloanâs head lower, protecting her from anything dangerous flying in.
He couldnât believe heâd told her to trust him and now they were in the middle of a tornado. Sheâd never trust him again. It sounded like trees were coming down outside and maybe a building.
The tornado lasted almost a minute before it was gone. He checked Sloan. There was no blood, and it didn't look like more than napkins and had leaves hit her.
âI need to go check outside.â
âBe careful.â
âWill you be fine here?â
She nodded, though her eyes were wide, fright shining plainly in them. "Yes."
He was responsible for her safety. What if something happened to herâsomething worse than being in a tornado?
âIâm fine. Go help.â
Daryl stood and pulled her up, giving her another look. She didnât seem injured at all. He took her hand and pulled her close.
âYou have your phone. And donât leave the restaurant. Iâll be back once I make sure no one is injured outside.â
âGo. Iâm fine.â
He dashed off, looking back as he made his way outside. The parking lot where his truck was located was fine. There was trash there, but no trees had blown into the lot. Across and down the street, a tree had fallen on a car parked at the curb. Carefully, he made his way around the downed limbs, the trash, the broken glass to the smashed car. It looked like everyone had gotten out before the tree fell.
The downtown area looked like a dangerous war zone. His mind flashed to Afghanistan, bombs going off, friends going down. He shook his head, forcing the image away. He didn't want to think about how terrible it had been for his friends.
Daryl placed his hand on his side, rubbing the scar. This wasn't Afghanistan, and no one was going to bomb them. The wail of a siren split the air. He turned, looking for anyone who needed help. An older gentleman was trying to escape a store across the street, but something was blocking the door.
Daryl rushed over and grabbed the piece of metal, careful not to cut himself. After freeing the man from the store, he helped out a mom and two kids, guiding them to their car. Rescue workers were on the scene, and there wasn't much for him to do. He went back to the restaurant and found Sloan sitting outside on the curb, holding a screaming toddler.
âHey, whereâd he come from?â Daryl asked over the cries from the kid.
âI found him wandering around.â
âJesus.â Daryl glanced around, searching for a police officer who wasnât busy.
An ambulance pulled up close, and the guy hopped out, asking Sloan if she was okay. Daryl moved to him.
âShe found the baby. We donât know who he belongs to.â
âWhat?â Confusion filled the paramedicâs face.
âWe donât know who the kid belongs to.
