Paige

Quietly shutting the door to his office, I leave Declan and walk somberly up the steps toward my room.

My being around is putting too many people in danger. I need to leave… alone. I can’t take Sarah away from the life she’s building here. She’s been too happy for my bullshit to mess that up for her. I’m hurting Declan by not being able to share the feelings with him that I feel so deeply within me. My presence is causing more harm than good.

Entering my room, I head toward the closet to fill a bag of my belongings. Every article I place inside is a countdown to my leaving.

Packed with the bare minimum, I stare longingly at the room. I know what I said about not wanting to be here. But I lied.

I want to stay with him. I really do. I want to find a way to accept that I’m his as much as he is mine. That we’re meant to be together for the rest of our lives. But my life has been and will always be too fucked up. Even for the mafia. He has an entire empire to run. He doesn’t need my baggage to add to that.
