Chapter Twenty-Two

Early the next morning, just before dawn, two farmhands arrived at Signor Bruni’s farm to find the old man’s body hanging from a tree in front of his house. They dropped their bikes onto the ground and ran over to cut him down. A piece of cardboard hung from his neck with words on it. Neither of the farmhands could read, so they removed it once they had cut down the body. One of them found a key hidden under a rock by the front door and let himself into the house to telephone the farmer’s daughter and alert the authorities. While one man waited for somebody to arrive who could relieve him of this terrible burden, his friend cycled over to Ca’Boschetto with the sign, hoping to find Paolo and to ask him to read it. He came across Paolo, his brother, and his son in the farmyard, about to start work.

After his initial shock at the news, Paolo took the sign and read it out loud. “‘This man has a child’s blood on his hands. All traitors will be punished.’” He lowered his head. “Bruni was a difficult man, but did he deserve to die? Can we claim to be on the side of righteousness if we condone murder?”

Luca glared at his father. “They did what they had to. I don’t condemn them for it. We are all safer now that he’s dead.” He was thinking about Elena and her mission. The partisans could kill every single informant as far as he was concerned. All he cared about was keeping her safe.

The farmhand took the sign back, thanking Paolo for his help. He couldn’t wait to get to town to spread the news. The café would be his first stop.
