CALLIEâS GUT DROPPED, but she tried to keep her surprise, and feelings of oncoming doom, off of her face.
As she and Emily stood on the street, Emily heaved a sigh, and stared at her toes. âI said Iâm married, but I have to be honest, itâs not been a happy marriage. You mightâve picked up on that from what I was telling you before, but really, you havenât heard the full extent of it.
âWe kind ofâ¦put our relationship together on a whim,â she said, her mouth twisting. âHeâs not a bad guy, but I can tell heâs not really interested in me. I donât think heâs cheating, and he hasnât said a bad word, but his mid is somewhere else. Heâs distant, and probably just happy to have someone to be with so that no one questions what heâs doing on his own. I want more for us, both of us, but Iâm not sure how to get through to him. Thatâs why I came all the way out here: to find some kind of happiness for myself.â
Callieâs heart broke. The more she listened, the more she wanted to hold the woman, to comfort her and promise her the world. She wanted to remind her that, after all the work ethic sheâd seen today, it couldnât be Emilyâs fault that this marriage wasnât working out.
She wanted to rail against goodness that this woman, whoâd opened her heart, had been hurt by someone she loved.
More than anything, though, she wanted to help Emily get out of that situation.
Except I canât very well spirit her back to my house, Emily told herself, though her heart was telling her to do exactly that.
Emily studied her, waiting to hear what she might say, Callie wanted to pull her close. She wanted to nuzzle her face in this womanâs hair, to make promises about the future she could offer this woman.
She just wasnât sure a woman nursing an obvious heartbreak would be able to believe anything that came out of Callieâs mouth right now.
Opening her mouth a couple times, working her jaw to try and figure out what to say, Callie shook her head, lost for words. Lost for the right things to say that wouldnât scare Emily off.
âIâm so sorry you feel so trapped,â she said at last, reaching out a hand. Emily slid her fingers against Callieâs palm, and immediately, Callie felt the woman beside her relaxing a little bit. âThat isnât fair for either you, or your husband. You both deserve better, and I really do hope that youâre able to find what you need in order to live your happiest, healthiest lives.â
Emily bowed her head. At first, Callie feared sheâd said something wrong, especially when a tear slipped down the womanâs cheek. When Emily squeezed her hand, though, Callie relaxed a little bit.
She even dared reach out to rub the womanâs shoulder. Dipping down, she resisted the urge to push a few locks of hair out of Callieâs face to see her better, and focused instead on the dark, tear-stained lashes she could see.
