CALLIE’S GUT DROPPED, but she tried to keep her surprise, and feelings of oncoming doom, off of her face.

As she and Emily stood on the street, Emily heaved a sigh, and stared at her toes. “I said I’m married, but I have to be honest, it’s not been a happy marriage. You might’ve picked up on that from what I was telling you before, but really, you haven’t heard the full extent of it.

“We kind of…put our relationship together on a whim,” she said, her mouth twisting. “He’s not a bad guy, but I can tell he’s not really interested in me. I don’t think he’s cheating, and he hasn’t said a bad word, but his mid is somewhere else. He’s distant, and probably just happy to have someone to be with so that no one questions what he’s doing on his own. I want more for us, both of us, but I’m not sure how to get through to him. That’s why I came all the way out here: to find some kind of happiness for myself.”

Callie’s heart broke. The more she listened, the more she wanted to hold the woman, to comfort her and promise her the world. She wanted to remind her that, after all the work ethic she’d seen today, it couldn’t be Emily’s fault that this marriage wasn’t working out.

She wanted to rail against goodness that this woman, who’d opened her heart, had been hurt by someone she loved.

More than anything, though, she wanted to help Emily get out of that situation.

Except I can’t very well spirit her back to my house, Emily told herself, though her heart was telling her to do exactly that.

Emily studied her, waiting to hear what she might say, Callie wanted to pull her close. She wanted to nuzzle her face in this woman’s hair, to make promises about the future she could offer this woman.

She just wasn’t sure a woman nursing an obvious heartbreak would be able to believe anything that came out of Callie’s mouth right now.

Opening her mouth a couple times, working her jaw to try and figure out what to say, Callie shook her head, lost for words. Lost for the right things to say that wouldn’t scare Emily off.

“I’m so sorry you feel so trapped,” she said at last, reaching out a hand. Emily slid her fingers against Callie’s palm, and immediately, Callie felt the woman beside her relaxing a little bit. “That isn’t fair for either you, or your husband. You both deserve better, and I really do hope that you’re able to find what you need in order to live your happiest, healthiest lives.”

Emily bowed her head. At first, Callie feared she’d said something wrong, especially when a tear slipped down the woman’s cheek. When Emily squeezed her hand, though, Callie relaxed a little bit.

She even dared reach out to rub the woman’s shoulder. Dipping down, she resisted the urge to push a few locks of hair out of Callie’s face to see her better, and focused instead on the dark, tear-stained lashes she could see.
