CHAPTER 20

CHAINS

Ihold her in my embrace, her lean body tucked tightly into mine as we come down from the high we’ve just been riding, and no one has me soaring higher than she does. A comfortable silence surrounds us as I comb my fingers gently through her hair, stopping every so often to press a kiss on her head. I never thought I’d ever get this chance with her again so I’m grasping it tightly with both hands.

I’m guessing she’ll be rushing off soon to go back to the bar, so I’m making this last. Gentle movement has my gaze dropping downward and her sated gaze meets mine as she her chin rests on my pec, softly stroking her fingers across my belly. “You keep doing that and I’ll be keeping you locked in this room for the rest of the night.” a smirk plays on my lips as I cock my brow at her, and with the same playful smirk directed back at me, she does it even more. I shift my hand to her face fluttering my fingertips over the rise of her cheekbone and smile. “You okay beautiful?”

Her head bobs slightly, “I was just thinking.” Her voice is just above a whisper.

“About…?” I urge her to go on.

“You.” She rolls onto her front to lean on her forearms. “Us,” her feet kick up behind her as I cock a brow. “Your hair cut like that, it takes me back to when we were sweet and innocent.” She smiles around her teeth biting into her lip, enticing me.

“Sweet and innocent.” I repeat. “I don’t think that was ever me,” I trace my finger around the outline of her face, pulling her lip from her teeth, brushing my thumb along it before tucking her hair behind her ear. “You were sweet though. My very own guardian angel.” I dip my head to capture her lips, kissing her slowly, savoring every second I have with her.

“I’ve never forgotten that day, that first time I ever saw you, hiding away behind the trash.” I feel the dark cloud brewing over me. “Every single day I was out in the yard looking for you.” Her voice catapulted me back to the present as I listened eagerly. “That day you had that black eye and I remember feeling sad.” She sighs, “God, I’d watched you for days, coming and going. I even looked forward to seeing you. Sounds stupid I know. I had no idea who you were or where you’d even come from, but there was something there in your eyes, a gentleness. You looked so lost.” Our eyes lock. I remember how brave she was when she saw me the first time. I thought she’d be scared but not her.

I drop my head back on the pillow and concentrate on the ceiling. “I remember thinking if I hid inside the compound, he’d never find me. He wouldn’t come looking for me here. He was too much of a fucking coward.” My teeth grit.
