Chapter Ten

The walk to the pizzeria was pleasant. The girls liked to ride in the wagon, so Brock pulled it behind them with both little girls cheering him on. Crissy and Beth walked together while Beth pushed Johnathan, who looked so much like Ollie, in a stroller.

He’d liked spending time with Emma, coloring and then reading a book to her. He had to admit, not having a television to be distracted by was good for the little girl. She played very well on her own and seemed to not need to be entertained like his nieces did. His mother assured him that the more kids his sister had, the more demanding they would be.

Still, part of him wished for a sibling for Emma. Seeing her interact with Tilly only confirmed that the little girl would enjoy having someone else to play with all of the time.

He’d always thought that he’d have a handful of kids himself. He remembered thinking how those kids would be blond-haired with blue eyes that matched Reagan’s.

Emma was the spitting image of Crissy, except for the short hair. Emma’s hair was shoulder length and always braided or put up in cute little pigtails.

Eddie’s was a local place. Most tourists didn’t know about the pizzeria, which sat off the back of the big market building. It was easily the best pizza in the Keys.

The place was surrounded by high-dollar restaurants that filled to the brim with sunburned tourists toting their screaming kids or college-aged singles partying it up.

Emma and Tilly sat quietly coloring the menu while they waited for their orders.

Before they had even sat down, he’d run into four other locals he knew. By the time their pizzas arrived, more than a dozen people had stopped to say hello to him.

“Wow, I guess you were pretty popular in school,” Crissy said as she cut up Emma’s pizza slice.

“Brock was prom-king popular,” Beth chimed in as she shifted a sleepy Johnathan in her arms.

“You were queen,” he reminded her.

“I was,” Beth replied with a huge smile. “What about you?” Beth turned to Crissy. “I never asked where you grew up?”

He watched Crissy struggle with keeping the cheer in her eyes as she answered. “Here and there. Mainly just outside of Miami.”

Beth narrowed her eyes slightly. “Your father is still alive, correct?”

“Yes.” Crissy nodded. “Although I don’t see or talk to him.”

“Yeah, my father is a recovering drug addict. That’s actually how Brock and I met. His father arrested mine in middle school. I had to show up at the station and post bail,” Beth answered.

“You posted bail for your father when you were in middle school?” Crissy asked, looking surprised.

“Yes.” Beth sighed. “Back then he used to get into all sorts of trouble. Reggie helped clean him up. By the time we hit high school, dad was clean and clear. Still is,” she said with a smile. “My mother, on the other hand, took off. She’s in Arizona somewhere with a new family.” She shrugged.

“Oh, my mother left shortly after I was born.
