Once we take our seats at the booth in the diner, my palms start to sweat. I slowly lift my head, lips thinning as I meet her doe eye gaze. Eyes filled with excitement, fear, lust, but not happiness. And godsdammit, I want to be the one that makes her eyes light up with happiness and every other emotion known to mankind. I want to be her reason for love. Fuck, love. Am I already that far gone over this woman in front of me after a few days? My eyes shift around the diner, needing to calm my nerves before I speak and stay something idiotic.

“Freeman, look at me.” she calmly says. “Let’s order, and I’ll ask questions and you answer.” I nod, refusing to speak yet. She orders for both of us, and I sit quietly. Letting Emma’s words from her letters speak to me. “Love again, baby. Find love and love again and be happy. I’ll send her your way, so don’t be a dumbass and let her walk away. Love her like I know you can love. You deserve to be loved.”

The clearing of a throat brings me back to the present. “Okay, let’s start with what were you goin’ to say in the truck this afternoon?” she asks as I predicted she would in my head.

Knowing now more than ever I need to speak up, my phone dings in my pocket. Pulling it out, thinking if this is the hospital again blocking me from having this conversation, then I’m walking out of here. Not looking back.

My phone dings again right as I pull it out of my pocket and see it’s from none other than Bran.
