Chapter Thirteen

Lips curved into a smile, Ben leaned a shoulder against the wall and enjoyed his woman at work. Zoe wandered through the lobby, checking out decorations, talking with people, and smoothing creases. There wasn’t much his woman missed and she made him proud. But more than her great business sense and eye for detail was her interest in and compassion for people.

The sliding door opened, and Byron Nolan entered the hotel, distracting Ben from his musings. Byron’s perceptive gaze swept the room as he limped forward, lingered for a moment on Zoe and his unreadable expression brightened.

The tall businessman walked with a purpose despite the slight hitch in his step, and he turned more than one head. Ben grinned, although Byron would notice everything and everyone, he wouldn’t return any of the interest. He was deeply invested in his beautiful submissive wife. The 24/7 power exchange his two friends had in their relationship didn’t appeal to Ben personally, but he could appreciate how Charlotte had bloomed under Byron’s directive.

After a polite greeting, Ben’s gaze involuntarily slid back to his own wife.

Byron turned his attention to Zoe as well. “She’s very good,” Byron observed. “Even after just a few months, I can see how things are running smoother here.” He turned toward Ben. “How is married life?”

“Fine.” Ben shrugged.

Byron arched a brow, the scarred side of his face puckering, and waited.

Persistent motherfucker.

“Don’t try your domineering ways on me, my friend. I’m not a submissive.”

Byron’s face relaxed into a smile. “Maybe not. But I don’t like the word ‘fine’, it’s a nugatory expression.”

Ben had to agree with him. “Especially when a woman uses the term.”

He mock-shuddered and Byron let out a laugh.

“Agreed, when a woman says fine, it’s actually an indication things are anything but up to her satisfaction.”

They both were silent for a few moments.

Byron’s eyebrow slid up again.

Ben sighed and gave in. “Honestly, I like being married to her. Living together is going very well. I guess.” He raked a hand through his hair. “I guess I like her.”

Byron slapped him on the back. “Good for you.” A rare grin broke through. “Now let’s talk business.”

Ben preferred discussing business over talking about feelings anytime and agreed readily.

After finishing his business meeting with Byron, Ben lingered at the hotel, conducting his other meetings through video conferences. Several times during the day, he sought out Zoe, started to raise an arm to hug her to him, and caught himself in the act. Work and sex shouldn’t be mixed, anyway. What happened between them in the bedroom should stay in the bedroom and was a pure physical necessity. He resolved himself to keep that in mind and knew he shouldn’t deviate from it.

In the next couple of days, Ben tried to keep his distance, but Zoe kept amazing him. Her skill, her compassion in her job were obvious. But sweet and competent or not, she was still secretive about her past. His instincts were warning him not to let down his guard.
