James Thomas

It was almost three in the morning when James said goodbye to his brother and entered his apartment. He went straight for the bathroom, but he did a double take as Mak’s sea-blue eyes watched him. He changed course, drawn to her like a magnet. He sat on the edge of the bed, resting his elbow on her bent knees.

“Can’t sleep?” James asked.

“No. You’re very late,” she said without looking at the clock. James wondered how many times she’d cast her gaze in its direction tonight before he’d walked in.

“Had a few things to clean up. Everything is fine now,” he said, wanting to ease the anxiety he heard in her words.

“Thank you,” she said.

“It’s okay to be shell-shocked, Mak. Most people would be,” James said, taking her hand.

“But not you . . . nothing shocks you anymore, does it?” she asked, testing him.

“Not much,” he said softly. “This relationship continues to shock me, but other than that, no.”

“Shocks you how?” she asked.

James wondered if she didn’t understand, or if she just wanted to hear it. He had to assume the latter. And he thought it best to show her as well as tell her. He slipped off his shoes and crawled onto the bed. She stretched out her legs, allowing him to hover over her.

“I’m shocked by how happy I am. I’m shocked by how much I like finishing work and being able to come home to you. I’m shocked by the level of my determination to fix this security issue so you can have your life back, and we can have a better life in general.”

“What do you want from life, James?” She met his gaze, and the cool color of her eyes radiated a surprising warmth.

“I want to live a life with some level of peace. And I want to live it with you,” he said, watching everything she did next.

For a moment she didn’t do anything, and that scared him. Few things shocked him, and fewer things scared him. But then she wrapped her arms around his neck, drawing him to her. Mak’s mouth tasted minty, like she’d just brushed her teeth, and he moaned as her tongue brushed against his. It was hard to leave her, but coming home to her after a few days away almost made up for it. Life was serving up plenty of delayed gratification at the moment.

He managed to pull back the bedding without breaking the kiss, and his hand ran from her thigh to her navel. He looked down, noting her full breasts. He sat back on his heels, pulling his sweater and T-shirt off. Mak’s eyes, which were normally crystal clear, looked hazy as they looked him over. Lust, he hoped. He put his hands on her inner thighs, spreading her legs wide. She watched him with an eagerness that spurred him on.

“Quiet, remember,” he warned her in a low, gravelly voice.

She nodded.

He ran two fingers between her slick folds, and she closed her eyes, tilting her head toward the ceiling.
