avid’s face was flushed. His smile was still wide, and he was still wearing the large cowboy hat. Christy couldn’t believe how different he seemed to her.

“Fina, this is my sister, Christy, and her husband, Todd.”

“It’s so nice to meet you.” Fina stretched out her arm and shook hands with Todd.

Christy took a small step forward and boldly offered Fina a warm hug instead of just a handshake. Fina’s expression made it clear that Christy’s hug was unexpected. In the yellow glow of the porch light Christy could see that Fina had high cheekbones and dark eyebrows that made her lovely face especially interesting. Her hair was short with lots of feathery flyaway strands. In the dim light, Fina’s silhouette reminded Christy of an Italian statue made of marble.

“We would invite you in,” Christy said, “but our daughter is sleeping.”

“That’s fine,” Fina said. “We can just sit here on the porch and talk if it won’t bother Hana.”

Christy was impressed that Fina knew Hana’s name and even pronounced it correctly. She and David had spent enough time together for her to know those details. Interesting.

Todd offered Fina his rocking chair while he and David leaned against the wood railing across the front of the porch. “David told us you’re leaving tomorrow,” Todd said. “I’m glad we had this chance to see you before then.”

“Well, actually.” Fina looked up at David and then explained how she had thought she was returning to Arizona to teach a volleyball clinic at the college she was attending. “But then I just heard today that they’re cutting back on the junior coaches and my position was cut.”

“That was a bad call on their part. She’s a fantastic coach.” David sounded equally vested in Fina’s disappointing news. “But now she’s staying in Glenbrooke this summer.” He looked happy about that.

“My mom owns the Wildflower Café in town. I’m sure you guys will eat there at least a couple of times. I’m going to work at the café and help out here at camp as much as I can. You’ll probably see a lot of me this week.”

“I hope so.” Christy felt warm toward Fina. She wasn’t sure yet if she liked her the way she instantly liked some people. Fina seemed a bit skittish, or maybe she was nervous being around David’s relatives. Christy tried to remember what that felt like the first time she met Todd’s dad, Bryan.

David cleared his throat and removed his big cowboy hat. Christy noticed for the first time that his muddled shade of reddish-brown hair like their dad’s was buzzed short. She hadn’t seen it that way since he was a little boy. He had a rounded sort of widow’s peak on his forehead that was noticeable now that he was nearly bald. He looked so big and so mature standing in front of her.

“We wanted to toss an idea at you guys,” David said. “It’s not a final plan or anything, but Fina is thinking about changing schools. She’s looking into Irvine or possibly Long Beach.
