Chapter Seven

The knock on his door came as a surprise and woke Special Investigator Vo Nguyen Quan from a deep sleep inside his quarters in the Public Security building. The soldier handed him a teleprinter message that’d come in minutes before, marked ‘Urgent-for immediate action.’ He read it through quickly and grunted with satisfaction. This was everything he could’ve wanted, yet never believed would fall into his hands so easily.

The ARVN POWs in Hanoi, due to be executed during the liberation celebration, had escaped. Aided by persons unknown, and one person who was known. Sergeant Phan Tam, of the Ministry of Public Security. His eyebrows rose. General Trung Kieu’s driver, no less. The authorities in Hanoi were currently pursuing the people responsible, and the order was dispatched to every teleprinter in every police station in Vietnam to be on the lookout.

They’d saved for last what was for him the most satisfying part of the message. Every known contact of Sergeant Phan Tam was to be placed under immediate arrest and brought in for questioning. Quan pulled on his uniform and hurried down to the ground floor. Burst into his office and began shouting orders at his clerk, who’d arrived sleepy-eyed just minutes before.

“Bring in every man, every officer. We have a crisis situation. I don’t care if they’re on leave, bring them in. Where is General Trung Kieu?”

The man looked surprised. “Sir, I imagine he’ll be in bed at home in his bungalow.”

“Send a team to arrest him and bring him in. As soon as he arrives, take him to an interrogation room. I will question him personally.”

“But, Sir, General Trung Kieu is our most senior officer. I’m not sure we can arrest him without special authority from Hanoi.”

Quan waved the teleprinter message in front of him. “I have the authority. Bring him in.”
