Back in Brian’s office, the mood is jubilant. Gary beams at each of us and thanks us for our help. He is a changed man, it is as though his confession has lifted a weight from his shoulders. I hate him for what he has done. I cannot forgive him, but I can understand.

“I can’t thank you enough. I didn’t know how I was going to get them onside,” he says.

I frown. “Don’t you think it was a little too easy?”

The smile falls from his face as he studies me. Then he shrugs. “Maybe. But maybe they are all as tired of Brian as we are. Remember we lost a lot of people when we attacked Zone E too. They won’t have forgotten that.”

He’s right. There were G fatalities, not at our hand, Sally had insisted that we didn’t kill anyone when they attacked. It was the zeb army that killed them. More deaths for Brian’s ever-growing toll.

“Um, sorry, I probably should have mentioned this earlier. But we have a few hundred of your people with us. We got them out of Zone E when the zebs were attacking. They decided to join us.”

Gary smiles. “Thank you. Please do let them know what happened here today.”

“I will, they should have the choice to come back. But what about the people you took away?”

He shrugs. “They’ll be fine. I’ve arranged for them to stay in an old warehouse, they’ll be comfortable until Brian returns,” his face darkens. “Then it is their choice. Stay or go. We won’t force their hand.”

Johanna had been watching our exchange. She isn’t sitting at the table with us. She is leaning against the far wall. As far as possible from Brian’s desk that she can get while still being in the room. “Unless the new leader doesn’t agree,” she says.

Gary looks sharply up at her and his shoulders slump once more. “We need to make sure the new leader is nothing like Brian.” His voice is so quiet it is as though he is talking to himself.

“Or give the council more power to veto decisions?” Joe suggests.

“Council?” Gary looks up in surprise. “What council?”

I groan. “Who makes the decisions for the zone?”

“Brian.” Gary confirms what I have already suspected.

“Only Brian?”

“Er… yeah.”

“You have one person responsible for making all decisions for an entire zone. With no one to challenge or provide advice?”

Gary nods.

“Right,” I say, drawing the word out with acid dripping off my tongue. I scratch my head in a look of mock concentration. “How did it all go so wrong?”

Gary bristles at my sarcasm. “It’s the way it has always been. We never had any problems with our last leader.”

“No?” I ask, my face a picture of innocence. “And what happened to him?”

Gary opens his mouth, then snaps it shut. He shrugs. “I guess we need to change our ways if we want to avoid this happening again.”

“It’s your zone,” I say with a sigh. “Having the big decisions voted on in Zone E works for us.
