“You okay back there, Mac?” Gabe asked. He checked the rearview mirror of Ben’s rental, glancing to where she and Winston sat in the back. “You’re looking a little stressed.”

“She has to be worn out from yesterday’s interrogation,” Ben said from the front passenger seat. “I know I am.”

“Are you sure this is the right way?” Mac asked. “You haven’t lived in Denver in a while.”

“Nice try,” Gabe said. Mac was an expert at evasion, and he was determined to call her on it, every single time. He hadn’t done that five years ago, but instead had allowed her to continue to build her wall. The wall that eventually destroyed their relationship.

Gabe met her gaze in the mirror once again. “That wasn’t the answer to my question,” he said. “But, yeah, I know where I’m going.”

Ben snickered. “The guidance thinks you missed your turn, too.”

Gabe gave his brother the side-eye. “Thanks for the support there, big brother.”

Ben raised his hands in response. “Just saying. The guidance doesn’t lie.”

“I’m doing some diversionary tactics to ensure we aren’t being tailed,” Gabe said.

Ben turned to her and winked. “Translation. He’s lost.”

Mac laughed, her voice warming Gabe. He’d gladly volunteer to be the target of all their jokes if it meant hearing her relaxed laughter more often.

“Make a right up ahead,” she said. “It’s a one-way street. Then circle back to Santa Fe.”

“Nothing much changes in Denver, does it?” Gabe observed. It seemed as if he’d never left the Mile High City.

“Sure it does,” Mac said. “You’ve passed at least four new businesses. The Colorado Ballet relocated down here to the arts district a while back. That’s newish.”

“Were you raised in Denver, Mackenzie?” Ben asked.

“Mostly. My family moved overseas when I hit high school.”

“That’s right. Gabe told me your father was an ambassador.”

Gabe shot his brother a warning look. This wasn’t the time to bring up a subject that might trigger the memories associated with her parents’ deaths.

“What?” Ben returned.

“Gabe,” Mac said gently, “it’s all right. I’m almost thirty-four. I can talk about my parents without breaking down.”

“Did I put my foot in my mouth again?” Ben asked, his gaze going from Gabe to Mac in the back seat.

“No. You’re fine,” Mac said. “When I was a freshman in high school, my father took the ambassador post.”

“So no moving every three years like we did?” Ben continued.

“No,” she said.

“We moved six times while we were growing up,” Gabe interjected. “The only good part was Ben always had my back, and I had his.”

“I always wished I had a brother or sister,” Mac said. “Although, Megan and Lance Shipman are like siblings to me.”

“It’s got its advantages and disadvantages,” Ben said. “We’ll have to compare notes sometime. I know all Gabe’s secrets.”

“Cut it out, Ben,” Gabe said. He was half-serious. Ben did know all his secrets, and a few could really cement the fact that he really was a nerd.

“There.” Mac waved a hand into the front seat. “You just passed the field office.
